Could be a pearlfish Carapus mourlani

both my emerald crabs and sallylightfoots like green star polyp slime, forage through the hydnopora, works on the clams and sometimes will pick at the polyps. I usually target feed my crabs with dried seaweed when i feed the tangs. they love it and it keeps their aggressive foraging down.

It could be any series of issues, maybe it has an internal parasite and theres really nothing you can do. Dose heavy garlic in your food and tank each time you feed and maybe some of that will get into his sifting sand to help his immune system. Garlic should be in your fish diet regularly anyways if it isn't already. Good luck.

mine took about 2 weeks before it ate anything but sand and it hid and burrowed alot. now it comes out and eats with the rest of the fish just fine.

I have lost a few gobies before, they love to jump and startle easy. I take the egg crate and cut out sections with a pair of dikes in random areas to let more light through. I have also only had problems with them jumping out at night so i usually uncover during the day hours especially once the fish have established and become settled.
