  1. I like the All For Reef but I bought a magnetic stirrer for it and it still didn't dissolve so I double the amount of water and then double the dose... problem solved. Since then am seeing some improvements in SPS which were struggling with 2 part dosing, better color anyways, and alk and calcium have been solid. So far so good at one month. I do not do dosing pumps, just slowlypour in a daily dose at the end of the day when I am checking everything before bed. I also do top offs manually and add vinegar as carbon dosing at this time.

  2. The obvious solution is more and more amazing plants! You guys have some great ones. Thanks again for hosting, thanks @obrien.david.j for the frags and knowledge, and @Eatfrenchfriesfor the cultures. I have a couple culture questions- what salinity and temperature should they be at, how many hours of light for the phyto, and was the phyto recently fertilized or is it due?

  3. I am going, and can bring a couple cuttings of photosynthetic gorgonian, some old school Tubb's Blues zoas and what I call Grape Ape hairy mushrooms, which are the green base type with some purple/lavender to the tips depending on lighting. They came from a public aquarium on the East Coast about 20 years ago, never saw anyone else sell or name them so I did 🙂 Took these photos with my phone and did my best on the colors but it's not the greatest. The phone wants to make all the blues and purples ridiculously oversaturated. So that last pic is the best of the Grape Ape.

  4. How big of a tank do you have? I have a lot of softies and an easy gorgonian that grows like mad. SE Portland. Downside: There may be vermetids. So dipping is in order. Then again, you may already have those 🙂 and also my driveway is currently a sheet of ice.

  5. They are presently switching from the well field to Bull Run and usually increase the ammonia during the transition, seems like it’s usually earlier but there was the fire. You could try making the first stage a chloramine rated carbon prefilter, just don’t forget to change it

  6. Hi,

I am breeding freshwater shrimp, dart frogs and raising sundews indoors and need to add more tank space. Before I ask my friend to build me a rack and buy new tanks, thought I would check if anyone has a rack of 20's, 10's or even 30L tanks that they want to sell from their old fish room project. No need for drilled tanks and planning on using sponge filters so not needing anything fancy.

    Thanks,

    Kate

  7. David that is probably what led to mine going away. They should be limited in the nano at the school, and my 125 being so overrun with vermetids most of my sps died, I probably should be enthusiastic about the hardier stuff anyways. Plus you can see these across the room, they tend to be really vivid. For the class they don't really understand coral so going for maximum color. They like the fish.

  8. Thanks! I can trade you too, technically I still own the tank... just in case a kid gets too physical with it or I otherwise need to remove or switch it to freshwater. So I don't mind paying or trading.

I used to have buckets of all of these, but they gradually got traded away, should have kept some.

  9. I started a nano for the classroom I work at, no skimmer so sticking to hardy colorful stuff. Was hoping to balance the colors with frags of the above. Located in SE Portland. The tank is in a special ed classroom and the kids love it, just got a pair of clowns fish wise. Can anyone sell or trade me the above listed stuff?
It is not an official Tanks For Teachers system, was not sure it would work out so just set it up myself, was kinda afraid kids would bang the glass or admins would freak out, but so far so good.
    Thanks, Kate

  10. 23 hours ago, obrien.david.j said:

I'm on the west side (97229) and I get my RO water tested monthly, as part of my ICP testing.    No phosphates have been detected in the past 12 months I've been doing this.    I like your idea of triple checking your test kit.  Maybe a club member is close enough, or just take a sample to one or two LFS's - and have them check.

For SPS die off and Algae problems - Argh, that's the classic.

The SPS that didn't completely die is recovering after water changes but the algae is still booming, testing with API kits shows high phosphate and nitrate... I am in SE near the reservoir at Powell Butte.

  11. Portland is using chloramines.

Anyone else testing Portland's water for phosphate? I am seeing it, and I think the buffer they use to maintain neutral Ph is phosphate based. My RO unit is not removing the phosphate, unfortunately, was using a pre filter then carbon followed by RO and DI on the resulting RO, and still getting phosphate. So I switched to a setup of prefilter-carbon-carbon-RO and no DI, same result. Now wondering if it is just my test kit. The waste water is so pure after two carbon filters that I use that on my freshwater tanks, and the RO is not killing crystal shrimp or dart frog tadpoles so I think it is pretty good. But my SPS is dying off and there is a lot of algae. I also use the waste water on quarantine tanks with LPS and soft coral and they are doing great, but again tons of algae.

When I was reading about the DI options I think I saw that chloramines would use them up rather quickly resulting in more expense.

  12. This is not exactly to scale. In addition to the overflow restricting access front to back it is drilled to accommodate a return line and locline assembly or other flow directing nozzles, which further could make it too small for your purposes if these are installed.

  13. The tank originally was a display at either Waves or Upscales, maybe both, can't remember. Not the bent corners style of like a Tru Vu, it's better than that, but it is older. The stand is pretty ugly at this point but you probably could put a dance party on it, it's stoutly constructed. Here is a picture of the seams from a few years back, and a link to the listing I put for it a while ago. I didn't do a good job upselling it 🙂 It's a good tank though.

  14. I have my 90 up for $150 with stand and sump. Center overflow, front is not badly scratched but sides might be and you can have the wet sand scratch kit. It's a 4x2 footprint tank. Loved it but I had it and a bow front, bought a 125 and trying to cram everything into it so I can just have one tank. The 90 is empty and dry but not super clean and you probably will want to customize the plumbing (3 holes drilled inside the overflow to play with)

There's also a fair amount of rock sitting in a tank of old saltwater you could have if you want it. I was cooking it but saw bristle worms and button polyps so I guess those things are immortal.
