  1. if i had the time i would incorporate this into a backyard pond and make it viewable from the front and top.  build it into a retaining wall and place stone to the front edges and over the top to hide the edges of the tank.  is the clear panel glass or acrylic?  if it's glass is it tempered?  sorry to high jack the thread but this might be helpful information to give someone an idea for a use for it.

  2. i tried a 20" reefbar pro for supplemental lighting over a 54 gallon corner tank but it didn't work out for space reasons.  they seemed to be nice lights and have good build quality for the price.  I thought their customer service was great.  if you have questions don't hesitate to ask them before you buy.

Updated fish stocking list (just because)...

    Purple tang (thanks Kim!)

    Blue Jaw trigger

    Eibills Angel

    Coral Beauty Angel

    Starry Blenny

    Male & Female Lyretail Anthias

    Marine Betta

    Green Coris Wrasse

    Melanarus Wrasse

    Possum Wrasse

    Blue Star Leopard Wrasse

    Orange Back Fairy Wrasse

Yeah... I'm a little short on wrasses right now.

i like the fish list.  i had an Eibli Angel once but it was good for a little while and then it started nipping LPS corals.  it had to be removed but it was easy to catch by putting a acan in the fish trap.  what is your experience with the fish so far?  if you are having good luck with one i might have to try another one.  I had a Coral Beauty for years and I never saw it nip a coral.

  4. i like it but unless you plan on keeping the back panel clean i'm not sure it's going to be useful for very long.  i think keeping the back panel clean is going to be the biggest challenge.

    Hey Clavin,

Looks like Brian didn't pick up those reflectors after all.  I wouldn't mind having them to pair with a couple of 400W mogul base halides I have sitting around that used to be in a canopy with just the open reflector shields.  I think they would work but not sure how the mogul bases mount to the reflector - let me take a look and see if I can figure that out.  You still out in OC?

    yeah i'm still in OC.

    15 hours ago, viper55 said:

Yeah I got busy and I don’t have any mogul ends for them so if you need them go for it

those reflectors have a metal slide that slides in for different watt bulbs I don’t see the slides on them so you would have to likely fab something up to make it work

the mogul bulb sockets and mounts were taken off these reflectors and i'm using them on a different set of reflectors.  you'll need something similar to what is shown below.

Sunlight Supply Metal Halide Socket with cord and plug

    marked you down.

If the protein skimmer works well I think I’ll take it.

And I think I’ll go for the LEDs and driver too while I’m at it. Are the LEDs themselves used (and if so, for how long?)

the skimmer worked well on a 40 gallon QT setup.  i now have (2) 40 gallon tank for my QT setup so i went with a larger skimmer.  LED driver and LEDs have never been used.

I can grab it tomorrow after work, do you have a ballast for that halide pendant? I’m thinking of going old school lighting for the tank. It’ll grow anything and I miss that Phoenix 14k bulb color

When I was down there last, I was told by my Tico friends to watch out for salt water crocodiles. I don't think it makes much news, but something to think about when in the water. Loved it down there, such a beautiful place to visit.

We saw one saltwater crocodile while fishing in the mangroves.  IME snorkeling is not a reason to go to Costa Rica because there isn't much to see with respect to corals.  We saw a good selection of fish when snorkeling.  Water clarity is not very good and supposedly that's because there is a lot of sediment in the water from all the rivers that flow into the ocean.  Rivers have a lot of sediment from all the farming.

We had a great trip and we saw a ton of monkeys, sloths, amphibians, reptiles and birds.  The Macaws and Toucans were amazing.  Here is a link to some of those photos and videos.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to get pictures of the Macaws or Toucans we saw.  We did go on a catamaran boat trip where we saw a couple whales and went snorkeling at one spot.  After snorkeling there were large tangs schooling near the boat and i got a short video of them being fed some crackers.  They were probably 18" to 24" long long and looked similar to a Dussumieri Tang.

  12. Traveling to Costa Rica next week for my brother's wedding.  Wondering if anyone has been there and if they have snorkeled from the shore or have taken a snorkeling trip from a boat?  From my research online it doesn't look like very good snorkeling.  We'll be staying near Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific Ocean side of the country.  Looks like they have a pretty good variety of fish but not much from a reef standpoint.  TIA

Yes, I have two 15 watt Aquanetic sterilizers, in good condition (new bulb) that I do not plan on using.  I also have a Apex Classic brain unit with screen, hardly used that I can part with and upgrade to the newer brain.

    what is a fair price?

sorry i should have clarified i need a UV larger than 25 watts cause that's what i have but i don't think it's large enough to kill parasites in a fish QT setup.  I'm looking for a full setup of the apex and considering paying $225 on reef2reef for the brain, display, eb8 and temp probe.  not sure what a brain and screen go for but i'd prefer not to have to buy components separately.   thanks!

I have an Apex Jr W/ PM1 Module (no pH probe) If your interested.

looking for the apex classic so i can use it as backup on my DT.  thanks!

  14. Wondering if anyone has an Apex classic that is in good working condition and are looking to sell.  This is for a QT setup so it doesn't need to be too fancy but it would be nice if it was the orange label classic so it could also be back up to what i have for the DT.

Also, need a larger UV sterilizer since i have (2) 40 breeders for QT now.

  15. i use the same medications you listed and have had good luck.  here is a link to a reef2reef thread that i found helpful.  there are many different ways to setup a QT.  my QT setup consists of a 40 breeder with sump, UV and protein skimmer.  I only run the UV and protein skimmer when i'm not medicating.  i like to try and give the fish a week to get acclimated and eating well before i medicate the tank so that's when i run the UV and skimmer.  hope that helps.

Do these have controls so a number of sets of bulbs can be turned on to mimick sunrise/sunset?

    (2) cords, (1) cord powers (2) bulbs and the other cord powers (6) bulbs.

i really like the light but i have two of these fixtures and now have a 6' tank so i don't need two of them.  i was using two of these over a 10' long tank previously.
