Kalkwasser is calcium hydorxide. Can someone look on their Mrs. Wages and tell me if it's calcium hydroxide or calcium chloride? I need to add calcium chloride to my tank as it turns out... not Ca(OH)2. Scott

OK, my Alk and Mg test kit came today. Ca Aquarium Pharm Inc kit: 320ppm Mg Salifert kit: not yet tested <------ 900! hmmm. I think I will start here. Alk Salifert kit: 10.2 dKH 1.215 SG NO3 red sea kit: 10 ppm PO4 Salifert kit: 0.25 ppm pH Red Sea kit: 8.3 So it seems to me that my Ca is low and my Alk is high. What's the suggestion? I have not run my Ca reactor in over 2 years. I just bought Ca(OH)2 for making kalkwasser. Also, clearly my NO3 is too high. I have done two water changes and have started Vodka. I'm also raising my SG gradually. It dropped over 6 months or a year while I didn't pay enough attention. Scott

Well, my NO3 is at 20 ppm so I decided to do a water change and start the Vodka regiment. After my water change, I was at 10 ppm. After three 1/2 doses, I have noticed white spots on my Yellow and Powder Brown Tangs. Now, it's my understanding that Ick is always with the Tangs and can flare when the fish is stressed. My question is, can/does Vodka feed the ick in such a way as to put the Tangs at risk? Scott

raising salinity I added a small cup of salt to my sump and it raised it .001. My system has 130 gal less rock and sand. Scott

If your salinity has fallen, how fast would you raise it. Mine is at 1.022. Scott

So here is the update. I have spoken with the nice folks as AquaC. They tell me I have the EV-150. I have a valve between my pump (rio 3100) and the skimmer and also an exhaust valve. AquaC has suggested that I reduce the input of water (this valve has course control) and then fine tune the skimmer with the output valve (a much higher quality valve). This allows me to get much better control over the skimmer. I let the skimmer set for 6 hrs yesterday at a somewhat safe level just to observe and no skimate was produced. I then turned it SAFER for the night. This morning before the lights turned on, I set the skimmer at the first safe point. Skimate came pouring out. My bucket was ready. The question... What biological process goes on with the lights out that increases the skimate? Scott

I have recently attached an AquaC EV 120 that I bought 6 years ago but never used as my tank I ended up buying had a PM skimmer built in... So, after not really getting much out of my skimmer all these years, I decided to try out the AquaC. I hooked it up w/ a Rio3100 pump and it foamed like crazy. I filled up my collection vat several times. It has settled down a bit now. My problem is that I have they system set at the right level with a valve between the pump and the skimmer so that the water level in the skimmer is right. The, for a while, no skimate is produced. Then, without warning, it bubbles over and fills my collection vat and in some cases, overflowing into my cabinet. A bit of a mess today. So, the question is, 1. Do pumps ever vary in power such that the skimmer could get overpowered after being set properly. 2. Do collection vats with float stoppers actually work? Mine never filled before because I don't think my PM skimmer ever worked properly! All help appreciated! Scott
