  1. I don't know of any other T5 fixtures like the ATI sunpower available in the U.S. Do you?

It sounds like you are making your comparison between ATI Sunpower and everything else.

My Red Sea T5 fixture is nice, but it is no ATI Sunpower.

I could amend my comments to say that for an average T5 fixture with nice bulbs, compared to a decent LED retrofit with Cree LEDs, I see better SPS color overall under the T5s.

I could probably do better with my LEDs if I swapped out some of my neutral whites for cyan, etc... As Bombertech suggested in his talk to the club at TPA.

There's definitely other options that are available in the US. Pacific Sun makes a very nice high end T5 fixture that I would say is comparable to the Sunpower. Sfiligoi still has t5 stealth fixtures floating around the US I believe. They might have lost that distrubution when AO went under though, I'm not too sure...

  2. I think another thing that needs to be mentioned is that halides just like T5's will perform VERY different depending on the ballasts used as well as the quality of reflectors and with T5's the active cooling.

You can't compare an inexpensive t5 fixture to say an ATI even if they're both using the same bulbs. We have to remember to compare apples to apples.

The same can be somewhat said for led's but with all the different binning and other varaiations, optics vs reflectors... I don't have the knowledge on led's to that extent so I can't comment on the difference in that realm. I had to enlist some outside help when it came to building the "best and most useful" led's for my new addition.

  3. Brads tank is a perfect example of inexpensive led's working very well, although would it be even better under halides supplemented by t5 or custom leds??

I question wether or not he would attempt to keep his higher end wild color morphs under the OR led's vs his custom diy stuff and would they keep those colors under the OR led's?

Also what you feed and how you feed does play a big part into color and growth...

I should have my diy led strip done next week so it'll be interesting to see what the addition of a few specific led's will do in my tank.

  4. It's not impossible to learn but it's definitely not as easy as you'd think. If I were you I'd go buy a 40 breeder and make the shelves. 36x18x16, pretty darn close to your dimensions, a lot less work and a whole lot cheaper than trying to build your own.

No worries, they won't be going anywhere while I'm gone.

  6. It's look just like the rainbow tort, but if you look closer the coralite are different, If you still have a frag available I want it

It's extremely similar! There's still frags available if you want one...

For reference here's what my Westside rainbow looks like in my tank.

  7. I can pick up a frag this weekend?

I'll be available Wednesday and Thursday of this week or it'll have to be next week after Tuesday... I won't be asking the wife to bag frags for people while I'm gone, it's hard enough to get her to touch the fish food in the freezer lol.

  9. I wonder if that was why he texted me the link (his name) ??

I opened the link on my phone and saw the jacked up blue photos and never read it :) now I guess I'll have to.

I meant to look at it later from something other than my phone and forgot

    Congrats MattV

What you don't like the Facebook sellers who only post pictures of specific high dollar corals under blue leds because "that's how it looks the best" lol

  10. I'd say probably not, given how well Ecotech's products sell, and they even have much cheaper alternatives.

And plenty of people will drop 900 bucks on an Apex controller, which provides some of the same kind of monitoring options. I imagine many people purchase an Apex largely for the ability to check on pH, temp, etc... remotely, which this thing will allow you to do.

While I agree I think the $40 monthly costs to keep the unit up and running properly could be it's demise, I can see a lot of people purchasing these initially then selling once their over the monthly costs... I'm still open minded about it and I'm excited to see how good it really is. I won't be dropping that kind of coin on something I definitely don't have a huge need for until I see some real world results.

  11.  I hope this makes it to the market soon and starts pushing other companies to keep up.

From the sounds of things these guys have a laundry list of patents on the device and the technology itself so my guess is they're pricing it knowing they're not going to have any real competition in the foreseeable future.

  12. I'll just sit back here and watch for a bit...

For that kind of an investment I want to see what some first adopters have to say after they've spent some time with it and see just how accurate the unit really is.

I'm not a fan of spending money on the notion of "it's amazing take our word for it" I'd rather pay a little more knowing exactly what I'm getting.
