  1. I ran the Kick-Ich for a week but found that having my Protein Skimmer and Carbon off was almost worse than letting the Ich run its course. Had to quit half way through the 10 days or so I was supposed to dose, but I started my Protein Skimmer and Carbon back up just in time to keep an algae outbreak from happening.

I lost 4 tangs and a couple of other fish, but thankfully don't see anything else with Ich. I will continue to soak the food with Selcon and Garlic, and I am running my UV 24 hours a day.

Also started to run Ozone recently and plumbed the output right to my protein skimmer which seems to have increased the skimmer's production, so thats a nice bonus.

Now just getting into a regular maintenance rhythm and minor tweaking here and there. Should look pretty good by May.

  2. Started last night dosing Kick-Ich to get rid of any Ich on my tangs. I should have waited a little longer before putting in corals so I could have dosed heavier, but ah well. Wish I had more room for a decent quarantine system also. I have never had ich before, so its a learning lesson. Also trying soaking all food in Selcon and Garlic. So far I only lost my Achilles, and only half the tangs seem to have any spots, but not taking any chances.

Lets hope it truly is Reef Safe and I don't lose anything else.

  3. Very nice tank and setup. I love tanks with lots of fish.

Curious on how you stocked your tank with the fish.

Did you quarantine them before putting them in?

Or were they quarantined from where you bought them?

    Thanks in advance

So far I don't have a big enough quarantine, LOL, so I acclimate and watch closely. I did have a bit of Ich, but has since been controlled by use of Ich medicine and UV, I would imagine the Cleaner Shrimp helped also.

  4. Wow' date=' what an amazing system (drooler)......I don't mean to sound nosey, but how the hell do u pay to keep such a large tank running? I love seeing these large, masterful tanks, but I always scratch my head when I think how much money must go into one (scratch). Maybe I need to get a second job (whistle)[/quote']

I have been very blessed to own a family company that's been doing very well. I also have other ways of making money, always busy, I work a lot of hours.

Thanks! Will do. I am actually in L.A. right now for Christmas, but have some beautiful fish going into the tank as soon as I get back. I am sure Clay could post some amazing pics of a few of the amazing Tangs I am collecting.

Garrett is also filling my tank with 60 Blue/Green Chromis and 20 Anthias as my schooling fish, along with various inverts, corals, and other fish.

January is going to be a big month for the tank, and a challenge for me to keep it all in balance.

  7. Lights are up!

Even LED light over the area where my Chaeto will grow

I installed a lift system for the LED lights, lifts them 12" higher so I can easily get access to the whole tank. At the lowest they are about 6" above the water.

  8. I've been looking for a 500 gallon tank! This tank is amazing! I look forward to seeing the set up? Can I ask how much & where to get a tank like this? :)

The 450 Gallon was acrylic and I can't remember who built it, but it was built for around $4000 I believe. My 750 Gallon is glass and was made by Miracles up in Canada for about $5,000 (not including shipping). There are quite a few Acrylic Tank Makers in the U.S., I think even a good one is located in L.A.

Just my opinion, but I would avoid the company GlassCages, they are cheap, but you get what you pay for IMO.

Good Luck, and I host a meeting this May that you can see my tank in person.

  9. Lights are being mounted next week. 3 out of 7 of the Energybar8's are programmed. Protein Skimmer running. Other equipment slowly coming on line. Got some new level switches and hooking them up to the Apex. Face frame and doors are 90% done. Trying to get the darn Ecotech's to pulse correctly, but for some reason two of the pumps, every third cycle, only come on for 2 seconds instead of 6. I guess I have to completely reset them.

I hope to have some more pictures up soon, especially once the lights go up.

I will be adding fish and corals starting in January.

  10. Hey Douglas, looking great. The pics realy help us see the good ideas that are all over this build.

I do have a concern... The strut straps that are directly over the sump area will likely rust. The metal is plated, but they usualy still rust at the contact points. (mainly at the tightening hardware) I know those straps are available in stainless, shouldn't be too hard to find.

    Keep the pics comming

It is a possible concern, but I really think it will take a while before they rust enough to be a problem, and they are very visible, so if I see any issues I can easily change out the clamp.

But, I appreciate the advise and I may check into the stainless steel option and if its not incredibly expensive it may be worth the change.
