  1. Hi Friend:

A couple of questions. What kind of container did your friend use? What was he container used for before getting the RO water? It doesn't take much residuals from a previous salt mix to kick up the TDS reading when you fill it up next time.

  2. I watched the whole video several weeks ago. I found it to be as anti-global warming biased as others have been in support of human caused global warming. I personally have no doubt that man has changed the environment. It started when he/she took his first breath and exhaled carbon dioxide. The real question is how much we are changing the environment, and what we should do about it. Should we do nothing, or should we all give up our cars and walk. My view is that the truth is somewhere between the viewpoints.

  3. Nothing like throwing money away :)

I bought a new cleaner shrimp today. Within 10 minutes I walked by my tank to see him hanging out of the mouth of a pajama cardinalfish. What a hobby. Guess I could have spent the money gambling.

Look on the bright side. At least you know your cardinalfish is healthy and no longer hungry.

  4. Aloha everyone, sorry, I've been real busy this week since I had my invert final on Friday. I want to start running my quaratine tank, but I need purified water. I don't want to use the salt water that they provide at Hatfield since we(everyone here at Hatfield) don't know what is in the water, such as pollution. I am resorting to artifical salt water instead. There are no RO hoses over here at the Hat, so I have to go find one, or get some.

For those that are coming to the meeting, it would be nice if you could help me with providing some good 'ol purified water (RO, DI, or RODI). I'll be setting this quarintine tank in my "dorm-apartment" so there will be very little chance of contamination (since my project will be taking place in the education wing of the Hat). When you come over I'll let you guess which apartment I live in. I need enough to fill up a 40 gallon tank, so I need a lot of help. Thanks.

    Mahalo nui loa,

    (Thank you very much)

    Jansen:

Sorry I didn't see this until we got back home. If you still need some RO/DI let me know and you can come by and pick some up.

  5. All:

We were wondering if anyone was interested in doing a pot-luck picnic after the Hatfield and Aquarium tours? We could meet at one of the local parks and just have a simple get together. One possibility would be the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Area, which is just across the bay from Hatfield and the aquarium (http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_208.php. We would plan on bringing a small charcoal grill, coleman stove, and a big pot. We were thinking about stopping here http://www.oregonoyster.com picking up some oysters and steamers

    Is anyone else interested??>

  6. Actually

    W = ((Pw-Pa)(0.089 + 0.0782*V)/Y)*3600

    Where

W = Rate of evaporation at the surface of the water level (kg/h m2)

Pw = Vapor pressure at saturation taken at the temperature of surface of water, in kPa

Pa = Vapor pressure at the dew point according to the temperature of the ambient air of the room, in kPa

V = Air velocity above at the surface of water, in m/s

Y = Latent heat necessary according to the change of state of the water vapor at the temperature of surface of water, in kJ/kg

And since the vapour pressure of water is approximately an exponential function of temperature the water loss is an exponential function of temperature. Also since the rate of evaporation is approximately proportional to the air velocity above the surface of the water. It should be much more effective to blow outside air directly at the water surface. If you don't use outside (by outside I mean outside of the hood or enclosed sump) then the partial pressure of the water in the air stream will approach the equilibrium vapor pressure at the tank temperature. In this case Pw will approach the value of Pa and W will approach zero.

  7. All:

Thanks for the comments. The pump that I'm actually planning on using is a Mag 2. It's the pump that seems to be recommended for the MR CR-6 Dual. I'm hoping that my reactor will be comparable to that one or the PM CR622D. I also did a quick calculation. The primary chamber of the reactor as it is presently designed has a volume of about 525 cubic inches or 2 1/4 gallons. Thus the MAG 2 should turn over the water 110 times per hour. This seems like it should keep it mixed pretty well. In any case I will design it so that I will be able to change out the pump easily in the future. I'll try to post pictures at the build moves forward. Here is how it stands at the moment.

  8. I've been thinking about putting together a calcium reactor. My thoughts are to make it a dual chamber system that is basically a 1 foot square box with a divider down the middle.

This way I don't have to worry about cutting circular flanges and I could make maximum usage of the footprint. What do people think?

  9. I cut my own gasket out of rubber gasket material: 1/4" ring' date=' 6" diameter. My next major project (Skimmer 2.0) will use a commercial o-ring in a routed channel -- the narrower the gasket, the better.[/quote']

Where did you get the gasket material? I'm in the process of putting together a dual stage reactor and one of the last things that I need to collect is the gasket.

  10. Fine. You can live in idleness and continue to believe what you may. Predictions may be exaggerated but the message is clear - humans need to change living behavior or there will be consequences.

Think about the things you throw away and know that they are going to sit in a landfill - never to degrade until a nuclear explosion. For example: plastic grocery bags, plastic cups, deodorants, aerosol containers, broken glass, waxed food containers, electronic equipment, broken light bulbs, kitchen appliances, the list goes on. If you think that nature can handle all that then I'd like to move into your world.

Sorry if i offend anyone but I strongly believe in making a difference.

I agree with you. That is why I will be out on a coastal beach this Saturday cleaning up plastic bags, cups, deodorants etc. that others have seen fit to toss out.
