jason7504
can torch's live in medium-high flow?
andy
What do you mean by medium-high flow? IME, torches are happiest when they're getting relatively gentle alternating flow. Too much flow can lead to tissue tearing and recession.
jason7504
well on the bottom of my tank but towards the right side of my tank which has higher flow from my tunze on the top left and pointing up and to the right so it wouldn't be in direct powerhead flow but it would be in higher flow
andy
I had trouble keeping my torch happy when I was up at 50X flow. You're right around 40x but flow is so unique, I think you'll just have to try it.
jason7504
well i have around 55x flow..the left side of my tank has more medium flow and the right seems to have more high flow..so my FS, blasto, acan, candy cane, orange monti and green birdsnest are on the left side and i have an acro on the right
dsoz
Torches should have about the same flow as FS. But don't put them near each other. Some have done this and they have been fine, but I would not try it. dsoz
CA2OR
I know they are different but I have found that my hammer seems to really like slow alternating current.

dsoz
how far apart should i put them? How long are the sweeper tentacles on the torch? I have seen torch sweepers about 6" long, and FS sweepers about 3-4" long. So that means that I would keep them about 6" apart. Also I would watch the current to make sure that the torch does not blow towards the FS, but have the FS blow towards the torch. dsoz
tidalsculpin
My yellow tip torch has 6 heads and I have to keep it 6 inches from everything but gsp. Also, I keep it in the sand bed. They do fine higher up but are really a moderate light euphyllia coral. I keep it closer to the green star polyp to inhibit growth. If you keep it tucked under a rock in the sand bed, then that would give it a bit lower flow and protect other corals.

grassi
Mine has relatively high flow, but it is indirect... the tentacles expand out about 6" at this point and I keep everything about 2" min away from that. We keep the FS and Hammer with about 50% flow from where the torch is...
jason7504
well if the powerhead is facing the right side glass, if the torch was in the bottom right side, would that be considered direct flow?
jason7504
is this too much flow for a torch?
dsoz
Seems OK. As long as the tentacles are moving a little, and they are not being ripped off the skeleton. looks like a nice torch. Maybe I should try getting a couple of those. dsoz
jason7504
ok so it doesn't look like the tentacles are moving too much? also sometimes the tentacles in a head will shrink down and then they expand back out after a bit..is this normal torch behavior? i haven't noticed it in my FS yeah its an awesome torch..the pic doesn't do it justice..its tentacles and tips are neon green and really glows ..got it from TEC
dsoz
Seems fine. I would not go more than that. Like I said, if the flesh is not getting torn, then it should be fine. Do you want to trade for a head of one of those? Sending PM. dsoz
reefboy
that is alot stronger then what it came out of but should still be fine
jason7504
here's what it looks like when a head retracts all of a sudden..
jason7504
that is alot stronger then what it came out of but should still be fine oh really? but do you think its too much flow? its the only area that it can really be in my tank
dsoz
Retracted heads could indicate that it thinks it just captured something that it thinks is food. dsoz

dsoz
It should open up in a couple of hours. If it stays retracted more than a day or two, then it does not like where it is put. Move it or risk having it die. dsoz
jason7504
well the head never open and died..it had brown jelly infection :/ so i chopped the head off but i hope my FS dont get attacked..should i do a freshwater dip or will that hurt it since there sensitive to water quality? CA2OR
probably wouldn't hurt.
