pantherguy30
Yeah i'm not a big fan of them either! i'm gonna run a couple actinic bulbs in there to so I built the hood to enclose everything. We'll see how long it last. Probably gonna ditch it somewhere down the road when we move. Not too worried about it now since the house market is so poor. Good time to buy but bad time to sell! I wish I could afford multiple homes. Lol
spectra
If you get the right K rating on the MH you will be good. I am running a 14K on mine now and love the color of it. After having the small light on mine and being able to reach into the tank anytime I want I will never go back to a canopy.
darrellw
Hi Panther, Looking good! What size is your cube? Can you post some pictures of how your overflow is set up? Thanks! Darrell
pantherguy30
The tank is 2 x 2 x 20 w' an external overflow rated for 900 gph. It has an 1 1/2 drain line. I will post some pics of the back when I ge to my main computer.(Rim)
mister crabs
whats your ventilation for the hood? may want to drill a couple round holes in back with a holesaw and install a couple fans in there.
pantherguy30
What size do you recomend? Plus do you think I need 2? I was thinking of 1- 4" fan.
mister crabs
I would do 1 at each end with the airflow going across the MH. that way you got air coming in and going out.
mister crabs
4" fans are a good size. depends on heat. u might not need them at all but better keep an eye on your temps when you first get the tank wet so you can adjust your ventilation
pantherguy30
Saw the stand and light mount you did for JSW Spectra. I may just have to steal that light mount idea! That thing looks sweet!
pantherguy30
The tank is wet now(icon)Just waiting on the live rock to show up! ordered the 44 pound box from Marine Depot. I feel kinda bad not getting it from a LFS but it saved me about $100 bucks to do it this way. Bad thing is it isn't cured and will probably make a mess of my tank! Will post some pics as soon as I get the live rock into the tank. (party)
spectra
If it is not cured I would not put it in the tank. If you have a garbage can or bucket throw a skimmer in there and a heater and cure it. Alot easier to do water changes and all the stuff that will fall off of it will not go in the tank. Now if it is a bare bottom tank and nothing else in there go for it as it would be easy to clean up then.

Just makes for too much work later on. Later Ryan
pantherguy30
Well the tank was wet for a few days. The top to the stand started to cup towards the tank! Even with 3-2' L metal steel braces on the underside! To much weight I guess. Had to drain the tank and now have to come up with plan B. R-3
That sucks talk to Spectra (Scott) He might be able to help out
pantherguy30
Took the tank off the stand and beefed up the top to support the weight a lot more. Just put water back in and I'll have to see if this fixed the problem. My issue was not useing waterproof glue! Yeah Smooth move on my part! All that woodworking and I had to go and ruin it with a dumb move like that. I just put L brackets all over the place to hold it all together along with laying about 6 2x3's under the top to give it more support. JasonH
Oh, that's brutal. Did you end up using Titebond III or something even more water-proof? I'm getting ready to build a stand of my own and am looking to learn from your... ah... mistake.(whistle)
pantherguy30
Ok so I have finished curing the rock and it's now in the tank. I have a few crabs and some snails along with a couple tank raised false percs. My water tests say it's go time to add some CORALS! If any of you have any frags they want to sell. I am now in the market!! I would post pics but the tank isn't much to look at yet. Got some small growth of coraline algea and thats about it.
