I know they are great for eating hair algae and I used cheap arm reactor medea and not enough phoslock and now I have a few small tuffts of hair algae and want to nip it before it gets out of hand. They really only will mess with smaller snails as they start to get larger and possibly with each other to try and battle for shells. Excellent little critters in my opinion. reefhut Posted July 9, 2008 Share Posted July 9, 2008 Hermits won't mess with clams, go for it! I would cut back on feeding meaty foods and use pellets for awhile. The reason is, the uneaten food rests on the rocks and rots, algae will preveil. So by cutting back on your feedings and feeding pellets will nip the algae in the butt.
