Oxygen as an anesthetic?

Recommended Posts

I was speaking to a vet at a conference the other night who is also a diver for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and she mentioned that one of the staff in charge of treating the fish there said they use pure oxygen as an anesthetic. Now, we all sort-of questioned the validity of that statement, so I decided to ask you who are wise in such matters. In my years of research I have learned that excessive oxygen levels cause tissue damage, so how can it be safely administered as an anesthesia? Thanks for clearing my head.

I have heard of pure oxygen being used to speed recovery from an anesthetic, but not as one.

I am looking into this one.

The following is a portion of a response I received today from Dennis Glaze, an Aquatic Animal Health/Husbandry Specialist at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

Dr. Tim that he refers to is Dr. Tim Miller-Morgan, DVM, Extension Veterinarian/Assistant Professor at HMSC.

"Now, as for the use of pure oxygen as an anesthetic, we're doing a bit of research on the topic. Dr. Tim was familiar with the concept, but wasn't sure of the validity of the claim. I'll get back with you as soon as I hear something.

Finally (for the moment) I'm not certain if this message will go only to you or be opened for all to read. If not, feel free to post it for all to read.

Talk with you soon,

Dennis"
