Tat2d Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I have never seen anything like this. Looks to me like some sort of bivalve. Just like to know exactly what it is, if possible. Thanks, Bobby
Tat2d Posted September 6, 2012 Author Posted September 6, 2012 sponge and thorny oyster I googled thorny oyster, and most of the pictures show the "thorns" coming from the shell. This has a smooth shell and the "thorns" coming from the mantle:confused: It's really cool looking, whatever it is. I was planning on getting rid of the xenia on the topside of the rock it's on, now I'm not so sure about doing that.
matty Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 It looks like that is an old shell and both are sponges. Does the white and pink retract into the shell when touched?
Tat2d Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 Haven't touched it yet. It does retract(not fully, but suddenly and noticeably) when I hit it with the flashlight at night.
matty Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 If you look at the link below there is a picture of what it looks like you have. Scroll down towards the end of the page and there is a question and answer about it. They say it is a type of Jewel box oyster? Closest I could find. Very cool! http://www.wetwebmedia.com/BivalveIDF3.htm
