Blue Z Reef
Hey guys, wondering if anyone has had this issue. I bought 2 acans, 1 looks great and is all puffed up and nice. The other looked ok the first night, then proceeded to start getting a brownish slime forming around the edges. I thought this may be from being cut there or something but wasn't sure. I left it for a day and it got worse. This morning I pulled it out and gave it a luigols bath for 10 mins and blew the slime off, which exposed dead skeleton underneath. This pic is what's left of the colony. Anyone have this issue with new/freshly cut Acans? It's just a bit strange since the other colony is just fine behind it. Just sucks since its the cool colored colony
SteveHash-fish20
Idk much about it but type in "brown jelly Disease" idk how often it is with acans but I know chalices can get them. Hope it's some what helpful and gl. Those are nice acans(scary)
NoobtoSalt
Doesn't look good bud. I haven't had good luck once they look like that. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Blue Z Reef
I guess we'll see what happens, I did what the brown jelly disease cures said already, so hopefully that keeps at least one polyp alive to regrow. Kinda strange since I did a luigols dip prior to addidtion to the tank, but they also said to blow lps off with stronger current too, guess I'll start that too in the future. SteveHash-fish20
Yeah again gl, and I'm just guessing as well but could the Duncan's be the issue? I could be wrong but I think Duncan's are stronger than acans and the receding damage does look like its coming from the area in which the Duncan's are. Mohaynow
My first thought was the neighboring duncan, like Steve said. a lot of lps can put out long feeding tentacles at night and sting neighboring corals.
Blue Z Reef
Just did a little reading and duncans don't sting like other lps. I think it just may not have been the best acan, my others have always done great. I'll update as things happen Someone mentioned using vitamin C, any dose this or anything with it in it? Blue Z Reef
Well that one went fast :( I pulled it out today, slime kept over taking everything. I noticed a tiny bit on the red one so it's in iodine now, but isn't as bad, hopefully it pulls through. Guess I'm gonna have to be more careful buying acans :-/
Tinsle
I know marine melafix as a coral dip works wonders but fresh cuts are always risky.sorry man.
SteveHash-fish20
How's the red acan blue
Blue Z Reef
The red is still hanging in there currently, had about 30% die off. I've given it and iodine bath and moved it to my frag rack for higher flow. I did a melafix dip...which I'm regretting as my skimmer has been going ape now for 4 days and I can't leave it on without overflowing lol
Blue Z Reef
The nice thing also is the seller said I could get a replacement next time I'm in so I'm just seeing how things do.
SteveHash-fish20
That's cool, yeah how long we're the pieces in your tank before you noticed any die off? And did you ever feed them? Jw because of response. I got a favia that can mow down all color is there and no die off I've had him for about 4 days now and he still looks fine just he's fresh cut. So the (scary) is always there lol
Blue Z Reef
I noticed it on the first acan in 24 hours, so it happened quick. I tried feeding the first day and I fed the red one last night. Red is still hanging on today.
