psaprilcruz
Ok I have had my tank setup for 3 months. Its a 20 gallon with 2 snails, 1 red leg hermit, 1 sexy shrimp, and a pair of clowns. It cycled for 2 months. Now here is my new issue my hermit keeps climbing the silicone in the corners and trys to get out (scratch). I feed him seaweed strips as a supplament and he also eats the left over fish food. I do water changes of 25% every weekend with ro water. Water paramaters ph - 8.1 always ammonia - 0 nitrite - 0 nitrate - 0.20 calcium - 400 alkalinaty -
Mohaynow
He's probably not trying to escape, most likely just searching for food. Or exploring his home. Mine do the same thing from time to time.
psaprilcruz
Thats what I am thinking. A few years ago I was using the tank for a betta breeding setup. I had siliconed dividers in it and some of the silicone is still on the back and he will climb it and eat the algae off the back of the tank. Gill
I had hermits do this in my 2.5 (the only saltwater tank I have had with silicone in the corners) I definitely think they were trying to escape. I'm sure if my fish could make a run for it they would as well, this is IME exactly why thy sometimes end up on the floor.
psaprilcruz
I don't know, he sure is funny though.
Islandoftiki
My Mexican red-leg hermit likes to do this. I think it's just something they do. My dwarf white leg hermit never has tried it. They both seem to have different diets, so probably also have different foraging behaviors.
Electrokate
They come from tidepools and expect to be able to crawl out of one and go explore another... which in most homes is likely to be a colossal fail for the crab.
Burningbaal
agreed on the non-specific-ness...many of my crabs do it with some consistency. they always fall at somepoint and may or may not try again...sometimes they just wander off in another direction. I think the tidepool comment is good, they climb all over, probably just figure it's another rock to explore.
psaprilcruz
Thanks for all the comments. He hasn't done it in about a week. There is a lot of algae on all my rocks, and i think he is very busy. Just a matter of time and he will again though I am sure.
