cklskypilot
I was just wondering if any one else is growing these. I have just started to grow these little guys and with the cost I should have done it a long time ago. I am growing the phyto in 5 gal. water jugs. I will be adding two 5 gal. jugs each week to my reef system. I am also hoping that this will also take the place of my reg. water changes each week. I am also hatching the brine shrimp in a 5 gal jug once every 3 days. as for the roties and copepods those will be in a 55 gal tank that I am just setting up. the cost for everthing was under 100 dollars. That price also included the one year supply of brine shrimp eggs { cysts } and the phyto. from Fl. aqua farms. Well I guest time will tell if I made the right choice. Please let me know what you think.
Emerald525
Electrokate is doing this too. She is a great resource Chuck. She had bags of copepods, rotifers and brine shrimp she sold at the meeting.
lewisriverfisherman
Maybe Im wrong but adding that much phyto to your tank every week will raise your phosphates. This would just be a guess in saying this as i dont know for sure, Hey what do I know maybe you can add enough phosphate remover to counter act this. I would like to know what everyone else has to say about this.
AquaticEngineer
I'm interested in what your doing here, I could use some of the stuff you got going for food in my cold water tank Let me know if you have any extra. We're practically neighbors out here, lol.

I ask about there fertalizer and the efect on my corals and fish. and there answer was it wont heart them at all. if my phosphates do go up then I will start doing the water changes again. mytshall
I just stared doing this after winning a start at the meeting. I have only been going about a week but I did find some great resources on the web. Chuck I'd like to know what you got as food because I got a couple small bottles from reef nutrition that should last a little while. http://www.reef-geeks.com/forums/aquaculture-breeding-geeks/219-how-grow-rotifers.html https://rotifer.pbworks.com/w/page/12136719/Culturing-Rotifers-At-Home http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/Raising-Live-Rotifers-Copepods-c199.html

TheGooseWhisperer
the idea of a 5g bucket of phyto counting as a water change sounds kinda scary to me. there should be lots of waste products from the algal growth
grassi
There are many people running phyto based systems with success, especially in Europe where the Grotech products are ready available. I don't mean just pouring some commercial brand phyto every other day, but dropping huge amounts of home cultured phyto (about 30ml per 100l) Phyto, believe it or not, can help the process of nutrients reduction if dosed well. The problem is that it is not easy to culture and dose, so it is a method which is not for everyone. I think that it is a good idea to give it a try and see if the method works well for your tank husbandry. Keep us updated with your results
grassi
You might want to check out this product (and similar) for continuous phyto feeding: http://www.planctonite.com/products.php?pid=

grassi
No, I haven't. I used phyto a few years ago and I had good results with a small tank. But it was easy to solve the issues with a small volume
