ToxicPoison
I've had a few 500w titanium heaters and they all seem to die really quickly. My current heater is a Won-Bros, and it is only 4 months old and it died overnight. I've used Finnex heaters in the past with the same result. They are controlled with an Apex controller/temp probe, and plugged into the outlet with the 10amp relay and not the 5amp switch, though I've tried the 5amp outlets in the past. The odd thing is, the 300w backup heater I have in the sump in the basement has been going strong for about a year now. It does have it's own dedicated controller, whereas my main tank heater does not. Does anyone else have this problem? Am I doing something wrong? This is really driving me nuts...I can't believe I need to replace my heater every 4 months.
Michael7979
I have not had good luck either. I am also on a backup heater as I type.
ReeFit
i have at least 5 dead heaters in a box, either dead, bad / stuck thermostats or electrocuting the water.
NoobtoSalt
My favorite heater is my halides... I haven't had many issues with my heaters but I also have them setup for 76 degrees and with my tanks lights on most of the day I don't think the heater comes on much anyways. tanktop74
I also don't run heaters, only in my salt water making 55 gal drum. My lights seem to keep the tank warm enough!
JimmyK
I habe the same issues with any heater 500 watt or above. I have dedicayed controllers and run multiple heaters. My sump is in the garage. Without heaters my tank will hiy the 60 's at night. I habe begun shoping getting ready for winter...
Michael7979
I'm thinking of doing two- 300w heaters instead of 1- 800w heater.
rgrcrain
I'm going the 2-300 route right now and just this morning I stuck my hand in the tank and brushed up against the halide reflector and got that old tingle. There has got to be some top-of-the-line heater out there that doesnt crap out.
grassi
I'm running 3 300w on apex with no problem
Algae
I've seen a disproportionate number of Finnex, Won, JBJ and other high-end heaters go out. My glass 300w Visi-Therm has (controlled by a DC-8) has been ticking along for 3 years which is not that unusual with Visi-Therms.
WAVES
Buy Eheims Ebo-Jager. I have used countless and have never had one go bad. I sold probably 100 of them and never got one back. Always smart to use multiple small heaters, if one fails ON you are less likely to cook the tank quickly. Giving you longer to discover the issue. ToxicPoison
Thanks for the responses all...even if it's not what I wanted to hear :( The problem with the glass heaters is I have euro-bracing on my tank so theres no way to mount one of those heaters without the dial being underwater. Guess I'll try using 2 300w ones instead....

My Ebo Jager has been laying on its side in the bottom of the sump for years...
