Algae
Just eliminated the 90 degree elbow on my rs135 skimmer pump to body connection. What a difference! Reduced a lot of back pressure. Air increased only maybe 1 to 1 1/2 scfh but the bubbles are much more broken up and the water output is dramatic. A real easy mod! It may work for many skimmers, possibly. I have a Sicci coming in and it might be too much! I may have to use it on my big 30" ER skimmer! I am going straight from now on, I promise. chewie
Eliminating the 90 does help a bit. It also keeps the pump from vibrating on the bottom of the sump. I think the Sicce will be a good match for your 8-3. Most likely better if ran as recirc.

Algae
Real easy! Just pull the 90 elbow and us a slip-slip and pressure fit. The foot is now sideways. I then put the foot next to the side glass in case the fitting loosens. You could also prop it up. This also eliminates any balance issues.
