drock59
So my Via Aqua Titanium heater has finally failed after the exhausting year and a half it was in service....[language filter]? My question is what have you found to be the most reliable heater and should I go with one big wattage heater or two smaller?
fly guy
hands down these are the most accurate heaters i have ever used. I have 4 of them but cvant attest for the longevity as i only started using them 6 months ago. But ive never heard anything negative. Just dont pull them out of the water, forget to unplug them and set them on the carpet...... CCR
Hot water bottles would work, safer, but a pain, J/K I don't use heaters at all. I go comando and let it swing
Guest Mbeef61
agree with fly guy here....i have had my 300 watter going for three years....i can also attest to the accuracy too...the one i have has digital readout saying if its plugged in...then a light to say if the heating element is on....then a digital readout of the temp....i wouldnt ever get anything else....lol i hear you with the carpet incident...i never thought burning chaeto would smell like burnt hair. drock59
So any of the Won brothers heaters eh? I dont know if i feel like dropping 50 bones on one heater but I for two. how about votes for 1 vs 2 heaters?
fly guy
If you dont have a temp controller either stand alone or on a chiller you can plug the heater into as well go with two smaller heaters just to be safe. : ) A few extra bucks that might someday save your tank from cooking is CHEAP insurance. andy
I read that the Ebo Jaeger company got sold (can't remember to who... Hagen maybe?) and the quality of the heaters dropped dramatically.
sknoch78
I used to be a big fan of the Ebo units, but I have had multiple failures over the last couple of years. I am talking about five different units. In some trad I did, I ended up with a Via-Aqua unit and could not be happier. I just bought two new ones for the 240. impur
I read that the Ebo Jaeger company got sold (can't remember to who... Hagen maybe?) and the quality of the heaters dropped dramatically. I have three and none hold a correct temp. I only use them to heat freshly mixed SW. JManrow
I have had a Won Bros. heater since 2002 and it's still going strong. I have seen many Aqua-Vias returned to the LFS. I have not yet tried the Gen-X Titaniums. Since titanium heaters are relatively new in the hobby, I'm sure improvements have been made in the last couple of years. WAVES
If you have thousands invested in livestock (not sure about your tank, I dont recall the size) I would invest in a controller. Then you have a fail safe, a heater thermostat, and the controller, both have to fail to cook your tank. IMO its your best insurance over any other devices on a tank, except maybe a good topoff system.
Reefin'
here is another recent thread on heaters....its a won heater that crapped out on this thread....HTH http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=890&highlight=heater
Twitterbait
I love Gen-x, I use a titanium and a crystal and they are rock solid and keep the temp well. you can turn the crystal on for 30 min and drop it in a bucket of icewater and it won't even phase it. my titanium is in its 3rd year and comes with a controller that has two plugs for an additional heater too. JManrow
I have looked into heaters that are used for raising Discus. A high quality heater is absolutely necessary raising these fish! Ebo-Jager, Rena, Won Bros., Hydor, and Rainbow-Lifeguard Systems are a few recommended. Has anyone used the Hydor THEO heaters? I would like to find more information on these. http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_heaters_hydor_theo.asp?CartId=

sknoch78
I have to go with Joel on this one and say that regardless what heater you use, a controller is an absolute must. I would say it is a toss up between my LMIII and my controller as for best overall purchase. Even before I bought a full tank controller I used a Ranco unit and loved it.
