  1. Jawfish won't be happy in a bare bottom tank and will most likely start jumping. If you add a deep substrate they are fascinating fish!
  2. That is one patient critter! I wouldn't have given that many warnings! What a dumb***!
  3. I wrap my tank in blankets/sleeping bags, battery backups for pumps, and I keep a 1,000 watt inverter to run the heaters from my car battery if desperate (I've never had to use it).
  4. I can see if I could get one off its rock tomorrow when the lights come on.
  5. I had no idea they would eat stuff that large & mobile! I guess I've been lucky so far- I have 6 of them and so far I don't think they've eaten any of their tank buddies. I've only had one mysterious disappearance (a TINY regal tang- about 3/4") that I blamed on my huge RBTA because the stupid tang was always following the clowns into it. Maybe I blamed the wrong anemone!
  6. Marine Depot. We use 4.0, 7.0, and 10.0 to calibrate the pH meter in the lab. http://www.marinedepot.com/Calibration_Solution_for_Testing_Equipment-FITECL-ct.html
  7. I'll take one! It will be awhile until get to Portland again though. How big are these guys? I'm judging by the zoas next to them about 1.5". Is that their max size?
  8. I was in Portland today and called a couple of times (after noon) to see if the shop was going to be open- no answer, so I didn't waste my time crossing the bridge. Spent my money elsewhere.
  9. Welcome to the forum! We should take Kim's advice & have a field trip!
  10. I started with dead sand (mostly- seeded with a few cups from my old aquarium) and live rock. I let sit for a couple of weeks, expecting a nitrate spike but never had one- so I figured it was safe to proceed (slowly). I started with 6 green chromis (which I now regret!), and a small clean-up crew and slowly added the stuff from my old tank over a month or so. Never had cyano, diatoms, algae (still don't- frantically knocking on wood right now).
  11. I used a bacteria starter from All for Fish in Albany- I don't remember the name of the product or who made it, but ask Ryan he'll know. The water was cloudy for a day or so. After I added the bacteria, I threw some ammonium chloride from my lab in the tank. I'll give you some on Saturday. Then test until nitrates are zero.
