  1. I use All for reef.  I like it.

I don’t have precipitation,  and it is much nicer on my hose & pumps than kalc.  I use powder and do mix it a little weak for calculating/pump reasons.

it is quit good at increasing both ca+ and alk.

    no potassium

It is intended to be a low dose, since Arcobacter is very sensitive to Cipro.

No need to worry about toxicity when using such low doses.   I’ve read that In reef tanks we like sub therapeutic doses, just to weaken rather than kill the bacteria.

We could dive deep into dosing….

I really like your comment about dips.  I do much larger doses as dips instead of in tank treatment.  I had brown jelly in torches, not any more.  I remove and treat whenever my torches don’t look 5 ️.

I had no idea Gonis get BJD!!!

Where do you get oxalinic acid?

I do dose every day, 0.250 mg / L instead of the one they said. Maybe its too high? Should I cut back on it? Can too much cause BJD?

This is a really low dose.  In humans (we are 70% water) we do 500mg twice daily.  You are not overdosing.

  4. I feel lucky.  Lost power for 4 hrs and have battery backup for ~ 72 hours for circulation (echotech battery backup).

I also have a small generator to keep heaters on.  It works well.

Unfortunately I had a pump issue/overflow that led to salinity falling to 1.022.    I corrected it over 12 hours (fast down so fast up).   My dosers kept dosing and my corals weren’t growing so my alk went to 12.5 over the following 3 days…. I normally check alkalinity daily, but with power outages, freezing rain, pump failure, and fixing salinity I just didn’t check alk.  My alk is normally so stable I wasn’t worried…. But alk spike and salinity drop is what stressed things out.

(things being me, corals and fish are fine)

its funny how one problem often leads to another.

Hope everyone is doing well and they are keeping their tanks warm.

Power came back on for me after 52 hours.

    Bad

    - Complete loss of life in all tanks (240g total).

    - Halted all pod production. Unknown if total loss. With my luck it'll just be Tigriopus and rotifers alive.

    - breeding projects....gone

    - bacteria culture projects..... gone

    Good

    - saved all of the phytoplankton in my collection. Shaken on the hour every hour.

    - only thing to survive the tank wipes was Sargassum (prefers cooler temps)

    - mangroves are fine

Ran a Ecoflow delta, Yeti 1500x, and hooked up a marine battery. Managed to keep power up for close to 40 hours. After that I was charging power cells st work to take home.

But in the end it was not enough. I staggered what I could, went manual where I could. The hardest part was keeping the heat up in my apartment.

Next time I'll get a place with wood burning capability or allow gas/propane generator.

Maybe I just had too many things to take care of. The big glass sliding door facing a frozen creek didn't help either, terrible insulation.

Regardless, it was definitely a learning experience for me.

Not sure where to go from here. Stepping away is not likely. Though my heart is definitely not in it right now.

I have another gonastrea for you.

Ya, those tank dimensions are epic. Would have been a post worthy setup even when dry or just newly put up!

Well done on a great looking tank.

I’m a tall and lanky guy but even 120x30x30 sounds like a maintenance challenge. Do you have any tongs or something you use to grab anything that falls into sandbed? Or an excuse to bust out a mask and snorkel?

Haha I do have a snorkel.  I’m short and I need my whole head in when I’m working.

I love topics like “ don’t put your hands in”. I’m always wondering: what about hair and shoulders 🤪

    I get really wet.

Tank looks great.   @Brittany - do you mind if I post the picture of you, with the tank, to show everyone Scale?    All - these photos don't do justice to a 120" long tank.  It looks Awesome in person!

You can post any pictures you have and I’m going to get better photos when I catch it with full lights in.

  8. Started Fall 2020

Ive always had tanks.  Fresh water, live rock with brittle star, lion fish only but nothing fancy.

I knew I didn’t want to give myself the option of giving up, so I went all in with my first mixed reef tank.

I’ve spent the last two years dreaming of the day it would be worth posting a tank thread.   Im not there yet, but decided to post anyway.
