I really wish I could get a better pic but for the life of me can't get it realistic colors. It's a deep blue with bright pink edges.

If you have a way to adjust 'white balance' that will get more true colors. Either adjust on the camera or if you can shoot 'RAW' format you can adjust it later on a computer, just FYI

  2. So I have some (what I thought) was xenia (light purple frilly hands), but it doesn't seem to be growing stalks as well as not pulsing... it appears to be almost encrusting a single rock which it was originating from.  It is in a high flow/high light area.  It actually looks like it's growing from the crevices and not laying down any mat, maybe it was 'eradicated' from this rock and still remained somewhere?

Only reason I'm asking is because I don't want it overrunning my tank and need to prepare for damage control.  It started as a few isolated patches on some LR I acquired and has kinda popped up in other various areas (only on this single rock) as well as spreading from the original spots.  Luckily it's high up and I'm assuming will only try to grow up so shouldn't spread to other rocks but just trying to prepare.  I'll try to get some photos later.

  3. Looking for a dosing pump, just for two part right now (1.5ml/day) so maybe 2-4 channel/pump unit?

Manually dosing now which is no problem but want something if we need a tank sitter so they don't have to dose.

    Thanks, bler 😁

  4. Looking to find a home for my clown.. not in any rush either, will be in a nano so something small (but large enough to host)

I don't have anything specific in mind but looking for a rock dweller.

  5. The rock is a mix of random types some branch, some pukani, some looks like a very old colony of some plating coral.. Lots of info to soak up here thanks everyone!! I'll look into the Vinegar and Acid baths as well :)

As far as seeding, I already have some LR sitting in my sump which I could use to seed these if I decided to.

  6. Hi Folks,

So I've acquired some old 'left for dead' LR.. I'd like to sterilize these and was reading about a bleach bath.

I've blasted it first with a hose get all the dirt/dust off, soaked for a few days and reblasted after loosening things up.  Visually removing any glue/plugs/sponges/etc.  I've noticed a few of the pieces have a ton of vermetid snail shells (most likely was facing the back/underside) and defiantly don't want to bring these into any new system so I was wondering if a bleach bath will kill everything and be good to go after a few weeks of soaking/rinsing/prepping/etc.  I'm not in any rush to use this so I can take my time.

Anyone else have much experience with re-using old LR that someone has left out for any indeterminate amount of time (both had dust/cobwebs/dirt so I'm assuming it's been at least 6-12months since it's seen water)

Rock will most likely go into a FO tank and/or for seeding from some LR I already have.

I'm not sure about Higher Thinking's experience but in my old tank, I had too much rockwork to effectively try removing and they were expert at getting into crevices where physical removal wasn't a viable option.  I tried the usual aptasia treatments to try and keep them in check but they eventually just got to a point where I had to pull the whole thing down - the rock baked in my driveway for about 6 years until I set another tank up - in which I fortunately have not seen them again.  The way the F-aptasia works, however, there is a chance it could be effective in cases where it's impractical to take out the rockwork.  If you can take it out (sounds like you already did) and remove them that way it's probably your best bet.  Hope you managed to catch them early enough.

    Thank you for the info!

I too hope I managed to catch them early enough :) I really only have maybe 4-5 decent sized LR pieces in the DT and 4-5 smaller ones so it is actually fairly easy to either turn them to get to all the places or remove them if needed.  I haven't started mounting any corals to the rock so that should make things easier to manage if I need to cull some pests or even toss rock if needed.

Second this - these look like majanos and are way harder to eradicate than aptasia with no known predators that I am aware of.  It would be worth trying the F-aptasia on these as I have recently also had much better luck with that than Aptasia-X on actual aptasia.  No experience trying it with majanos as it wasn't around when I had my outbreak.  Like Andrew, I tore down a large (125) tank because of these - they are not to be trifled with!

    Good luck!

Well, fortunately I have a 20g and the rock is actually pretty easy to move/relocate/etc. I feel like I was able to eliminate them all but there is always a possibility I missed one or some cells were left behind.  At least they appear to like the light and will come out from the dark which helps with removal and finding them.

Do they just pop up in large swaths within a few days?  If they do return is manual (A-X or F-A) removal an option?  These were on the rock for quite a while and did propagate but I didn't notice in anything uncontrollable if I had addressed it earlier.  I noticed what looked to be some sort of BTA and should have taken note when they were propagating that they could possibly be a pest.

Since you have some experience, what was the reasoning behind the complete teardown because of these instead of trying to eradicate them? A 100+ would be much more of a hassle then my nano so I could totally see an infestation of a tank that large as a major undertaking.

  9. Hi there Matt!!

    Welcome to the hobby :)

Good and popular fuge algae is chaetomorpha

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-01/sl/ has some info on it.. people usually give/trade/sell some macro when they need to 'harvest' sometimes you can find it at a LFS.  I purchased a bunch of calurpa algae and sorted through it, pulled out a few strands of chaeto and  fauchea to isolate and 'planted' the rest.  I'll eventually cull out some of the calurpa after the chaeto and fauchea take hold
