  1. Thanks everyone for your input.  I have not heard that raising the alk will help, so I will try that.  By the end of summer, I hope to have a Red Sea peninsula tank starting.  So starting over is not something I want to do at this point (I don't even want to remove the sand).  This is my first tank, so I knew I would run into problems.  Good way to learn.  Anyway, gonna try all your suggestions and see where it goes.  Ill keep this updated!

  2. Have been battling dino for the past couple months and would love some suggestions.  I have a 29 gallon biocube with an intank media basket (purigen and chemipure blue on 2nd and 3rd shelf) and intank chaeto fuge basket in 2nd chamber.  I have quite a few zoas, a rock flower anemone, so coral is not very diverse.  I know changing the light schedule to actually turning off the lights for 3 days are options as well as promoting competitive algae to fight for nutrients are some answers.  Any specific regimens that have been successful would be appreciated :)

Its cool to get to know what people do!! I received a wildlife science degree from OSU and then 3 years in the peace corps primarily working with the EU on getting new national parks off the ground and lots of environmental education and alternative livelihood projects. Upon returning to the US I spent a little over a decade as a wetland biologist/restoration ecologist and had projects all over the west coast.

I got tired of consulting and about 5 years ago decided to grow marijuana full time. So now i own and manage a 7,000 sq ft production facility in NE portland. So now I am part engineer, part electrician, part permit cordinator, part botanist, part reef aquarium nerd/savior, part Winterhawks fanboi and full time baby sitter.

  4. Thanks Exodus for the time you took to write that.  I struggled with going with the smaller tank, as I have read how much more difficult it is to start out on a tank that small (although it is the larger biocube that I bought yesterday).  In the end, I wanted to start out with a tank that was a bit easier to water change and I also wanted a smaller amount of sealife so when I do mess up, the tolls will be smaller.  Perhaps a mistake, but I am still excited.  If it goes well, I have a feeling the biocube will be short lived for me.  Thanks Brian (pdxmonkeyboy) for helping me out!

  5. Hi all,

Got interested in saltwater fish tanks about 40 years ago when my brother had a tank for about 3 years.  When my brother would go out of town, I was responsible for taking care of it.  I have always wanted to have one, and now is the time.  I have another friend on here that has been my inspiration on getting started in this hobby.  I have not bought one single thing yet.  Looking at one of the bigger Biocubes to start out on, so if you know of anyone who has one for sale, send me a PM.  Been looking through the forums and it's nice to see how friendly everyone is!

    Cheers!
