  1. Like what? Cerith/turbo/nerites Snails get the algae, cucumbers eat the detritus. Add a sand sifting star, some nassarius snails, clams and brittles. Couple that all with a solid filtration system and a robust biofilter via macro, voila!

I'll start watching at night again. That's when I caught the shrimp doing this.

  2. That sucks, I had a similar experience but with both emerald crabs and hermits. Don't keep either anymore.

I just returned all my hermits to TPA yesterday. I'm with you on that. Emeralds on the other hand have always behaved themselves. They make it seem like there's no bubble algae but they have little colonies in the rocks they feed on.

    Crabs and shrimp are jerks.

  3. Only use a little of the sand from you old tank....not all of it. Also just scrape from the top only. Once you get into it bad things can happen unless you have been stirring it and know there is nothing wrong with it.

Need to paint that overflow also you don't want to see that.....did you run an emergency drain? Looks like you are going with the Herbie style from what I see.

Also no baffles in the sump?

Emergency drain? Can that work with external overflow boxes?

  4. They killed a red trachy first, then tore the bleeding apple up. The other emerald meat coral got beat up next, then my symphyllia. Everything but that first trachy and the pictured meat is still alive and recovering.

Finally caught the vandals when they started in on this meat.

Back when it was doing better.

I've learned something. Sexy shrimp and peppermint shrimp suck. Literally found a sexy burrowed inside, wreaking havok. Removed them all with a turkey baster.

The coral recovered slightly. Then I found a peppermint tearing it's mouth open during dark hours. Moved it to the frag tank but it's done.

    :(

  6. I've had the blue variety for over a year now. She's annoying with the sand splashing sometimes but other than that she's my favorite.

Super social, always in my face when I'm viewing the tank. She has stopped growing at around 6". She's been in a 75g if that helps. Her and our fairy wrasse are best buds.

  7. Me " What is the difference between those two?"

Irritated answer: " one is a snail and one is a crab " ????

    Ahhahaha!

I'll never forget the first time I went to TPA in salem and promptly decided I was getting into reefing.

Garrett took a lot of time explaining things like cycling a new tank, tites tates etc.

After about an hour or two straight of noob questions I walked out with two smaller MH pendants and more questions than answers.

One thing I had neglected to ask was how to hang them. Instead, I placed them both sitting on top of the glass canopy, right on the plastic seam.

That was a fun conversation when I returned them and admitted why. XD

  8. Flooded our 75g display onto the brand new pergo floors in June. We were at Disneyland watching the fireworks display when my tank sitter called.

I have an oversized return pump and before this incident ran it as high as I could without flooding. That was lesson one, slow that turnover.

The killer was that I had no idea about the snail in the plumbing problem and thus no gutter guard on the overflow. Well, that flooded most of my sump volume out of the top of the display. Probably close to 40 gallons.

Haha you live and you learn!

  9. Absolutely incredible event. My daughter and I didn't stay too long because she is 5, but we were blown away with the selection. Absolutely cherry picked collections for completely reasonable prices.

I picked up half a dozen really incredible pieces, a few of which I didn't even know existed.

Thank you to everyone that put their time, money and effort forth to make this happen. This was the first reef event I've ever been to and you guys have ensured it won't be the last!
