I graduated in May. Moved out here from Colorado for an internship. I'm waiting to see if they're going to keep me on permanently before I set up my next tank. It's killing me.

  3. Phyto, just got some from algaebarn in Colorado so far so good with it. Also yes I does acro power but only once weekly so u less you have heavy filtration don't over do either of these.

I actually just moved up from Colorado a few months ago. The phyto from algae barn is awesome. I also used the stuff to keep a healthy copepod population for my mandarin. I went through about a bottle a month and my zoas absolutely loved it and my mandarin was fat off pods. If you're on the fence, I would definitely do it.

  4. Adam and Bret's place is definitely the place to go for an incredible array of named zoas at good prices! It's also just fun!

Just stopped by today. Great selection and prices. I'll be back soon. You should definitely check it out.

  5. My last skimmer was rated 160 gallons over the volume of my tank. As stated above it would just stop making a foam head until I fed the tank again. Also as stated, I had 0 nitrates 0 nitrite and don't know about phosphate because I have never tested it since I have 0 algae problems.

Do you keep corals? I'm slightly concerned that if I run it full time that I won't have enough nutrients for zoas, acans, etc.

I can set it on a timer if necessary but my pH drops when the skimmer is off. I suppose I could run the skimmer at night when pH is usually a little lower and leave it off during the day. Thoughts?

  6. A say run it! Run it 24/7 and stuff that 40g with 10 4" tangs and you will be right at the limit of one inch per gallon of fish..????

I wish! There is a reason for a 200 gallon rated skimmer. I plan on setting up a 125 or 180 within 6 months. So those tangs are definitely happening! [emoji2]

I'm hoping to pick up a more appropriately sized one for the 40 soon, I'm just wondering if I can delay that purchase by using the oversized one.

  7. I am wondering if a skimmer rated for 200 gallons will even do anything on a 40 breeder.  I always oversize my skimmers, but never quite this much.  The 40 breeder is plumbed to a 20 gallon sump.  The baffles allow for water level to be held at the manufacturer's suggested height, and the footprint will fit, however, with the bio-load being so much lower than what the skimmer is rated for, will the skimmer actually help?  Are there any potential down sides?  I'm confident that the bubbles will diffuse before reaching the return pump, so I am not concerned there.

    Thanks for your help!

  8. Hello all,

My name is Brandon.  I just moved from Denver to Portland for a job and am beginning to plan out my new tank.  None of my reef equipment made the move, so I am planning completely from scratch.  I will not be purchasing anything big until April, but due to learning a lot of hard lessons on previous tanks, I am trying to micro-manage this one to death before I even begin the build.  I'm sure I will be posting to the forum for advice soon.  Here are my plans so far:

    180 gallon mixed reef

    Fish I definitely want:

    2 Fancy clownfish

    1 Purple tang

    1 Flasher wrasse

    1 One-Spot Foxface

    1 Green Mandarin

    1 Purple Firefish

    1 Blue hippo tang

As far as corals, I really enjoy and have had previous success with zoas and acans.  But I would like to aim for a good mix this go around.

I am hoping to find some great shops and vendors local and hope to meet some great people once I'm ready to dive in to this project!
