  1. It's not overfilling I'm worried about, it was in case a sensor or switch failed it wouldn't know when to stop. The one that "Matty" above recommended has an option for a backup switch in case one ever were to fail. Matty, from looking up reviews on them, you got me sold! I hope it all works out well!!!! Thanks so much for the input!!!

  2. I am going to be purchasing an ATO unit very soon to make up for the evaporation and salinity fluctuations that are going on in my tank.  I am gone for long periods during the day and cannot have my salinity jumping up during this time due to the evaporation.

My question is does anybody have any recommendations on any long lasting affective ATO's that are reasonably priced.  The one I was considering is $80 and would like to stay in that range.  I'm not saying I want to stay at $80 but would like to stay under $150 as much as possible, but am willing to pay for an AMAZING ATO.  The one concern I have is over filling if a sensor goes out, falls, gets jammed up, etc...      I have a pump (Rio 2100) that I can use with it.  The one that has pretty good reviews that I was considering is the JBJ ATO Item # JB5111 at MarineDepot.  Its out of stock for 2-3 weeks and this is part of the reason I would like some more input.  I am new to the hobby and am trying to get my tank running stable before putting any livestock in it.

Thank you very much for all your input and look forward to reading replies!

  3. I have a 65g tall, dimensions are 24" deep, 18" front to back, and 36" wide.  I am looking for some LED's for my tand and the trouble I am having is finding some that will 1.) penetrate 24" 2.) able to drill into top of cover to hang, and most importantly 3.) some that will work with the split divider down the middle of the top of that tank.  I need to be able to set them up to where they come on and turn off on their own (I work long hours) and would like them to slowly light up and slowly dim down when turning on and off.  I figured I would have to get two, which is expected with that [language filter] divider.  I was looking at the kessil a360 and the radion xr15 as well.

Can anybody chime in with some suggestions.  I have pics of my tank under the post "already addicted noob"  in the "introduce yourself" category.

If there is a way to get only one fixture, that is preferred.  If I have to ditch the cover I will, just trying to keep if at all possible.

The plan I have is spending $900 so if I can stay at that budget or is at all possible less that would be awesome.  I am wanting to make it a fish, lps, and softies tank, sps eventually, but figured I would get the hang of things first.

Thanks so much in advance for all your help, any and all input is greatly appreciated!!!

  4. Not sure exactly but its a corallife I know that. Its got a Rio 1700 pump pushing it. I haven't started the cycle process yet, that will begin on Wednesday. It being only saltwater and no bacteria, will that cause it to push out more than normal bubbles. It is a used skimmer, just hasn't been used in a while. I cleaned it up real good so the bubbles are just being sucked out, and not creating a bubble mountain for the skimmer to actually start to work. Any input on the wet/dry converting to refugium would be awesome as well! I need the passageways to stop the bubbles that a wet dry doesn't really have and I would really like a refugium, just don't have a whole lot of room. The one I got now is 20" long. Thanks in advance!!!

  5. Not going to be using skimmer for now I guess, can't figure out how to stop the microbubbles from getting to the display because the skimmer has to sit in the last section. I put the outake in the last compartment and its still letting far to many into display tank. If anybody has any suggestions please chime in, I really want to use skimmer!

  6. I'm looking to buy led fixture. Needs to be suitable for 36" tank, programmable. I work a lot so it has to be able to handle itself when working. Let me know what u have. Will be getting rid of t5's and MH ballasts and setup. Thank you.

  7. OK, so as far as the overflow, anybody plz chime in with info on this one!

I have 1" going from standpipe down to wet/dry filter (using as sump) going through. Comes out with external pump pulling from sump, passes through gate valve and check valve, than back up to recirculate in tank.

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong! From what I understand and know about the system, there is no way for it to overflow even with a power outage or with return pump failing. And even if it does go back down to sump, the overdlow box can drain down to sump and will have plenty of room to hold what's there, even though there is no way for it to drain if its not being pushed up return to go down the gravity overflow.

If I knew how to post pictures I would post them, I took them all along the way and plan on starting a build thread if there is a category for it.

Anybody please jump in with any info!

The return pump is an 1100 little giant external pump. Again, will post pics when I figure out how to, I just been plumbing it all night and just got some. Its time for a good night sleep while its all drying and getting ready for the fill tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for all the info and help, plz jump in with any info and especially if I'm wrong about overflow protection!!!!

  8. I would love to chat sometime, that would be great. Let me know when you are available! I go to Corvallis frequently for supplies due to the fact that Albany SUCKS and has no reefer supplies! Thanks so much for info and offer!!!

  9. Ya, wanting to seed as well as get some decent rock, base rock as well. Store prices are a bit out there when it comes to rock, but I will be going to Salem to check tomorrow. Trying to get it all plumbed up today and ready for water after all the rock is found. I would like to get all the rock in it now so I don't have to cure any later, so anything you might have or willing to sell, let me know and toss up some pick, thanks in advance, it is much appreciated!!!

  10. If I quarantine the rock, how long until the phosphate levels will drop, will it be safe to cure 40-50 lbs of rick in a new build? Will it cause problems while cycling tank with large amount of uncured rock, and will the one chunk of cured rock help this?

Thanks so much for all the help and info, its very much appreciated!!!

  11. Have read so many articles on plumbing, the only thing I cannot find anywhere are the gate valves, but I'm gonna use ball valves for now and if adding them becomes necessary then I will at a later time. The tank if reed ready so I have the drain and return drilled inside a big overflow in the back, so I'm good to go. I live in Albany and our supply of saltwater supplies is pretty much non existent! Will take pics after I get home today. Need to finish cleaning the coraline algae out, that is quite the task!!! Leak check as well, than plumb and fill! I'm so excited, and am trying not to push it but the goal is to have the water, sand, and rock in this weekend.

Is it worth it to buy cured rock or will it be just as fast to buy dry? I can get a chunk of cured for cheap and fill the rest with sand and dry rock. I am thinking one chunk of cured, 40-50lbs of dry/dead rock, and trying to figure out how much substrate to put in it.

I want a coral tank so high flow is a must! I order two tunze pumps and should be achieving 1750+ gph. Its a 55g tall, so I don't think I will have an issue with sand getting disturbed from water flow.

I was just going to get a 20lb bag of caribsea live sand and seed it with any other (white) sand necessary. Trying to find the bigger grain sand for easier cleaning and so I don't disturb from high flow.

Any reefers here in Albany or close by?

Any thoughts and suggestions are very welcome and appreciated!!!

  12. New to saltwater. Just bought a 55g tall, stand and over head, metal halide, wet/dry filter (using as sump), chems, pumps, all ready to go! Finishing up plumbing tomorrow and will be getting cycle started! YAY!!! Anybody selling live/dry rock, live sand, invertebrates, etc. Please let me know. Very excited to be apart of the community!!!
