  1. What reef related gifts did you get this year?!?

I'll go first. My family got me The Blue Glow 17" Black acrylic frag rack for my frag tank! Sadly shipping was late so I don't have it yet but I can't wait to put it in my tank and to get some frags on it! It holds over 300 plugs! Not to mention how sharp it looks!

So what did you guys get for your tanks?? :)

  2. Welcome back Joel! LEDs have exploded lately, and they are pretty affordable also. A good one to look up are the Ocean Revives. They are a local company and they make a solid light for a good price! I have 5 of them spread over two tanks and I love them! I've also heard that they are coming out with a new light soon also that allows even more controllability!

Are you hoping to put the new tank in your class room or have it at home?

  3. I've been battling some algae for a while now and I can't seem to beat it. I've cut feeding to a bare minimum, but that hasn't seemed to help. I'm thinking of adding GFO to the system to see if that helps me get the edge on it until my macro algae starts to get a footing. Would you guys recommend using GFO? I've heard a lot of good and bad things about it? I just don't wan to stress my acros out.

It's a mixed reef so I've got all kinds of corals, SPS LPS and Softies. Corals all look great, I just hate the algae look.....

  4. It'll be a couple of weeks before I cut it again. I'll put you on the list for a frag.

Good news is I now have a frag of the nightmares. We'll see how they do over the next few weeks.

  5. There was an article written by a guy who took several coral frags back home from his trip to MACNA. In the end, the trip was like 8 hours and all he did was wrap them in paper towels. This included SPS.

also ready that article! Along with other studies that corals transport better just wrapped in a wet paper town. It's just not the norm so people don't do it. Very interesting stuff though!

  7. I bought a rock of zoas and an utter chaos frag while visiting family in San Jose, California for the weekend and hauled them all the way home! It was 29 hours from the time the fish store bagged the coral until I had them acclimated and in my tank. No air stones, no heaters(just warm water bottle).

It is simply amazing how they can go so long in a bag. I know they get shipped all over the world and are fine but it was something else to see the whole process from point A to B. Anyways just wanted to share for those people who are like me and worry about the 2 hour car ride from "local" fish stores lol! :)

  8. Some of those pictures remind me of when a coral is in the sand bed for too long. You had said that there was a bit of a sandstorm, which may have caused some hydrogen sulfide to be kicked up. Especially, with sand beds that don't get turned over too often.

I was curious about what hydrogen sulfide does to corals, and came along to this paper:

    http://www.pnas.org/content/109/24/E1558

There is some interesting stuff in there, but I guess a common thing with sediments, corals and hydrogen sulfide is there is somewhat of a cascade. As some tissue dies on the coral from being in the sediment, it lowers surrounding pH, causing more hydrogen sulfide to be produced by microbes.

Maybe do a good sized water change, but in my opinion it looks like some sediment might have hurt them.

I agree with this, my first thought was something being released out of the sand bed also. What are your parameters at? That can help us figure it out also to see if somethings off.

  9. Travis and Jeff both had some Oregon torte up for sale. You can check to see if they have anything left. Good luck with the rest of stuff .

I may have to make a trip up there then! Trying to create a mini colony in my tank :)
