  1. Alright I figured it out. My problem is I keep seeing the male barb connection coming off the pump and was trying to figure out how to connect that to the PVC. All along I just needed to remove the barb and then I can install this guy e6e7d6c7f2bda880b8f7104f55a04a98.jpg

I also got a bag of other goodies that I expect I will need. e3e9cdc8aa78f1a42b2353056472fd9a.jpg

Since this is my first time trying this I'm sure I forgot something and will need to make a return trip. Now I just need my pump and sump to show up so I can make this all happen

  2. I get the union part. It looks like there is still a straight piece of pipe that would be glued directly to the barb? Mostly I'm confused with the direct connection from pump to pipe. The barb and o ring seem like a good idea for a flex tube but not a lot of surface area for the glue to adhere to a straight PVC pipe

  3. This site is effed.

This makes me sad. Although I don't Run a reef currently I still love to read this forum. Alright I love my drama and sadly there's been a lot. it seems as though this poor site has been reduced to bugs and Jerry Springeresk commentary. Yet each day I log back in with hopes that something changes and the forum returns to what I fell in love with. People coming together to help one another out in this addiction we call a hobby.

  4. I have always ran tubbing to my sumps but i think for this build i want to plumb with PVC. Ive looked a lot online and have seen how to use unions to be able to remove some of the hardware and i am familiar with putting the PVC piping together from my days of spud gun building. the only thing i am having a hard time figuring out is how to get the pump connected to the PVC can some of you send me some examples and pictures please. I live in the vancouver Area if any of you are hard plumbed i would love to swing by and take a look to get some ideas.

  5. !800 pet supplies is running a 25% off everything sale. It looks like their shipping times are not the best. As long as you are not in a rush it looks like you could score a good deal through them.

  6. First off Merry Christmas i hope you all were able to enjoy your time with your family. This project got put on hold due to other household needs and then with christmas around the corner I didn't want to buy something that i might be gifted. Well santa dropped off some cool stuff but nothing for the fish tank. In the next day i will begin the ordering. figured i would pop on here and get some advice on some of the elements. remember this tank is freshwater so i don't need the extreme on all items but i might switch it over to a reef tank at some point in time.

So far i have decided on the trigger ruby20c this is all i am set on so far.

For pump i was thinking a mag drive 9.5 any thoughts?

Lighting I need help on so please give me advice. where i have the tank i can mount anything to the wall for support and i am not quite sure i want anything hanging from the ceiling. preferably attach it to the stand or some sort of stand that will rest on the floor

i would also like to make some sort of a top i doubt it will be possible but i like the look of the wood sticking out and wouldn't mind finding a solution that would cover the tank and still allow for that wood to extend out of the tank.

is there anything else that i might be missing besides the plumbing hardware and some electrical components?

I would like to get everything ordered in the next few days so that it is here before my birthday, 1/4/84. I took the week off and plan to have this tank operational with fish in it.

is this post a joke? do people even watch beaver football still? I hate bang wagon jumpers also but this is your home state man and if beavers can't do it at least oregon has a shot representing oregon as a whole. the ducks have put the state on the map in football.

You do realize Oregon State is the only Oregon school in the last decade to win a national title in a sport correct?

Obviously I'm living in fantasy land. As much as it pains me' date=' I have to acknowledge that the Ducks are a solid program and the chances of an upset are extremely slim. However, I think wehave upset more top ten teams in the last ten years than any other program. I recall reading some stat about that. What's difficult for me is that every one is a Ducks fan, yet rarely do any of these people have any ties to U of O or Eugene. I can understand as Oregonians if you like both teams, that's the understandable expectation. However, I can't seem to understand why the majority of Ducks "fans" are so in favor of that program over Oregon State, yet they have no personally affiliation with the program. It's a straight bandwagon group of people. [/quote']

What do you and every duck fan have in common?

Neither of you attended school at U of O.

I know the feeling it seems the only people that are beavers fans actually went to school there. The rest of the state is a bunch of band wagon idiots. It's often a bummer for me because. I like to talk sports and most ducks fans don't know their team enough to say anything educated let alone even repeat a recent headline about their team.

  10. Well you do have a good point with that. I am out of town quite a bit and have had quite a few disasters as I recall freshwater didn't require as much maintenance. So I could probably just use the ro/di water with the OTDs filter I have and just top off directly from there....(plotting)

    Don't tempt me!(laugh)

Get on it then There would be two of us on here doing a freshwater build. Maybe we could get lucky enough to have someone give us an area where we are welcomed

  11. Well thanks for sharing I think if you send a pm to one of the board members or officers I don't think they would have a problem with it. I'm glad you decided to share here instead of starting another forum' date=' it looks like it is going to be a really nice tank. There are several freshwater tank owners on this forum. I have to admit I have been partial to saltwater tanks. I didn't even know what a Manzanita was. I haven't had a freshwater tank since I was a kid but I loved it. What in your opinion would you say are the pros of freshwater versus saltwater tanks?[/quote']

For me there are two things that I really enjoy with a freshwater tank. Im the first is I enjoy watching a cichlid community interact with one another. The second is with me being short on time as of late the maintenance is much easier. Also when I travel I can easily ask someone to top off my tank. Much harder to explain how to test parameters and dose a tank properly to a friend.

QUOTE=featherblue;341106]Isn't ph an issue with Malawi cichlids as well? I know theres some plants that will adjust to the higher ph; but mosses tend to melt

Cichlids are my priority I hadn't looked into the plants at all until I saw the picture of the planted tank that looked cool. Not much of a deal breaker as I have some cool wood and will get some slate in there as well too

  12. I have decided to go back to my roots. 20ish years ago I fell in love with the hobby when I bought my first cichlid. This one will be a lake Malawi stocked tanks. I really enjoy watching the pecking order being established and the different breeding behaviors.

Side not has anyone every had a freshwater fuge? I would think it's going to be the same principle as my reef but I'm not sure which plants should go in there. On a positive side it will also double a fry chamber

  13. This tank will be a freshwater tank but I figure we all like a good fish tank and all the fresh forums seem like they are not as active.

I am starting with a Marineland 93 gallon rimless cube and matching stand. I went down to southern Oregon and picked up some manzanita to put in the tank. I'm planning on getting everything else in the next few months.

Trigger systems makes a cube sump that will fit under the tank very nice. It has room for some filter media and a small refugium too. Has anyone ran a refugium on their fresh water. Still have to figure out a light. I haven't decided if I will have live plants or not. Also I've seen a few of you out there painting the inside of your stand I think I like that idea and might steal it.

So far this is what it looks like 8148fa73d717cd795b7788e58c816bd1.jpg15a2cabe9756b77ef6d22d73a7902e14.jpg7e7fcae60759c3e464fc7632d96f2e2c.jpg

  14. Manzanita is a California thing, but it creeps into the Oregon area. I can connect you with this guy that sells and ships manzanita all over. Great prices and shipping is usually around 20-25 depending on size.

Additionally, there is the best hook up on the way to Newport. I don't know if the person is still there (he was selling his property the last time I was there), but on the Corvallis highway, about midway between Corvallis and Newport there is a house with a big sign that says "Exotic Wood Furniture." That guy sells awesome pieces of manzanita for really cheap. I've bought wood from him three times for my planted tanks. On a side note, his wood furniture is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Way out of my price range, but still great to look at.

So I found a guy on Facebook called amongst the woods llc. Is this the same guy you are referring to on the way to Newport?

  15. Manzanita wood looks very similar and can be found pretty readily. You have to soak it for a while before it stops floating but it does work. It might be a good alternative if you can't find the Mopani root (had to google that one lol)

Good to know. Does it grow naturally in the northwest that you know of. I wouldn't mind harvesting some choice pieces

  16. I know I know this thread probably should be in the classified section maybe even the classified section outside of the salt section. The only problem is Micah informed me today that my account was deleted during a system crash DOH!. No big deal nothing really lost except for some clout and the ability to gain access to all areas of the forum. if it really bothers (threaten) the admin that i am post here you can let me know.

Now onto my main quest. I have put off the reef tank for the time being as i have just been swamped at work and had a hard time keeping it going. I have a sweet 93 gallon rimless cube that I still want to put together and i decided upon a cichlid tank again as this is where i first fell in love with the hobby 20 years ago. i have a design in mind and will need a good amount of the Mopani root and it is pretty hard to come by. Let me know what you have laying around I'll buy it. i figure al though we are all salt junkies on here that a few of you came from fresh and are ready to update your interior decorating and sell that sweet mantel piece.
