  1. How big is your hermit crab? Do you know what kind it is? What color are its legs? Some types of hermits are aggressive to begin with. I have 4 orange legs, 5 zebra's and a halloween hermit who likes to hang upside down off of all my SPS including the birdsnest. I have had to kick them off some SPS that they were too curious about, they can do damage even if they are eating algae between the polyps and the branches. If you want to keep that hermit crab, try spot feeding the hermit- it might not be getting enough food which could lead to them munching on coral and eating the polyps.

  2. Nah, reefers don't count as tourists. :) They are researchers on sabatical who have aloha aina. Tourists are the people who stick their head in the water at the beach and start jumping around and screaming at the top of their lungs that there are fish in there!!!! Then they chase the turtles (who are endangered), step and stand all over the corals and forget to use sunscreen. (scary)

Well now tourists do know about it!:p Thanks for the insider information!(clap)
  3. Happy Anniversary!! She knew something was up. Why else would she check her Hawaiian Airlines account when a trip to Portland was planned? (scratch) If she really was mad, then it is good that it happened this way instead of going through security and a 5.5-6 hour fumming plane ride. She probably logged onto pnwmas and saw your threads. :D

Kealakekua Bay, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, Kua Bay and Kahaluu Beach are some of my favorites. Those and Hapuna are crowded sometimes and it feels really hot there right now, so it will be even more so. For a beautiful, clean beach without the crowds and with some shade- take a right on Kealakehe Parkway towards Honokohau Marina and Small Boat Harbor. Park your car in the parking lot farthest inland and take one of the two trails to the right and walk until you get to the white sand beach to the right of the harbor. It is a beautiful white sand beach in a protected cove; there is a pavilion and a canoe house but usually only one or two people there because it is not a marketed beach spot and tourists don't know about it.:p

  4. I have a yellow tang who is just a big bully and I think I now hate him. (flame) Anyone have any experience catching a tang in their tank without having to take all the live rock out? I spent hours tonight trying to catch him and throw him in my sump; the little punk is getting kicked out and promptly delivered to my favorite LFS asap. (threaten)

  5. Hello All,

I am searching for Hermit Crab Shells for my clean up crew and wondered if anyone had experience shopping for new houses for these criters & have any recommendations on where to buy? I have looked at all the websites I could find online but don't fully trust them enough to buy and put those shells into my tank. They sell painted shells and polished shells that I don't think were made for saltwater hermits. I am thinking these shells are made for those children who have pet hermits in a little plastic hamster box (not submerged).

I am hoping to find a variety of shells from extremly tiny up to 3/4"; natural shells, round opening, and mother-of-pearl inside finish. Whenever one of my bigger hermits changes into a bigger shell, the rest of them 'upgrade' within two days to the next size up that becomes available and have done so twice now.

Want to keep these little guys happy so they leave my favorite sand snails alone. (nono)

  6. When I use my Brute trash can, I use a pump to transfer the RO water into a 7 gallon jug so that I can easily carry it into my house without hurting myself. I then empty the jug into a 14 gallon tub next to my tank and do my mixing/cooking of the saltwater right there. When the saltwater is at the right temperature and salinity, I use a vacuum to drain my tank into the empty 7 gallon jug (that way I know exactly how much I took out of the tank); and then use the pump to transfer the new saltwater batch into my tank.

  7. I have the 225(6speed) in Aviator Grey. The quattro is a must' date=' without it's not really an audi, just a VW:p. Never been in the A3 but I've drove a couple S4's and A6's with the 2.7T. That is a great engine. My next car(money permitting) will probably either be an S4 Avant or a (997) 911. I really love the RS6 also but I'm not into sedans so much and well you know the story there. If I don't have an avant then I'd rather have a 2 seater I guess...(scratch) Is their any logic to that? I plan on retiring the TT to the Garage when I can afford to but the almost 2 year layoff has killed that dream for a while otherwise it would already be done. She's at 110K right now which really bums me out but it's my everything car. I go to work in it, I take it snowboarding, vacations to the coast, and pretty much anywhere else you would take a SUV(ground clearance pending). It handles better in adverse conditions then every SUV I've got my hands on hands down. Why do you think my name is Snowpunk anyway:D. I'm on Quattroworld a lot but stay away from Vortex(for the most part) and audiworld(completely).[/quote']

There is something different about the Avant balance and handling versus the sedan. Avants are better. (clap) The snow and sand are a breeze, permitting you have the the right kind of tire. I found out the hard way that quattro is not going to save you in the snow if you have the wrong kind of tire on.

  8. I've had my TT for just under 5 worry free years. I also say if you maintain it you have a much greater chance of having little to no issues with it. I love the car more then any other I've ever owned. I have done a fair amount of suspension and engine(air/fuel) work too so it gets ran harder then your average commuter car by far. I'll either keep it forever or sell it to buy a lower mileage one to keep forever:). It's my little German tank!!!

TT's are fun, is it a manual or dsg? Have you tried the A3? I hope that they bring some diesel models soon that have Quattro. A3's are really spunky. :) I almost got one once but could not bring myself to be ok with the fact that at the time there were no A3's available with Quattro. The engineering on Audi is brilliant when you get into it all technically and they surely stick to the road don't they? (rock2) We want the RS4 Avant but they have not brought that model to the US yet. I want an Audi that I don't have to drive on I5; rock chips every day are painful to the soul! I loved them both, which is good and bad too. It would make me livid when people would damage it (door dings, fuel attendant issues, and hit & runs) + rocks and stuff flying off of cars on I-5; can be too stressful and takes the 'fun' right out of it. There is something to be said about having a daily driver that you don't care so much about. We sold our S4 and regret it to this day. If you like your TT, keep it. :) It is hard to buy another one that you don't know everything about or its history. The S4 we had was nagaro blue with the two-toned blue recaro seats etc. Have you ever heard the engine on one? It has a deep growl! It saved me when a deer jumped out in front of me once, all I had to do was look in my rear view mirror and slam the brakes. It's like all you have to worry about is the people behind you that can't stop at the rate you are going to. Does it seem to you that you have to use the cruise control a lot because it doesn't seem like you are driving fast, but your speedo says otherwise? Are you on the Audi forums? I also have a soft spot for the Alfa Romeo Brera, they keep saying that they will be coming back to the US- but who knows. They are temperamental and glitchy though which is a deterent for sure. I had a 159 but the dang thing was a constant headache and everything that could go wrong did so it got too expensive and irritating.

  9. I have had two Audi's (A4 sedan and S4 Avant). I have never had the expensive repair experience or any unreliability issues or stranding events. I think it is all about religious maintenance as with anything else (saltwater tanks); and getting the extended warranty. That way you have 7 years of no stress, no worries and no out of pocket expenses except tires, wipers and oil changes. I have always been able to sell my cars for full market value and never lost money ($15K when I sold the A4 and $43K for the S4); it is not a good idea to buy an Audi brand new or any car for that matter. I got my car loans for 3% APR for full retail value from Onpoint CU and Pentagon Federal CU. Insurance cost is average ($70/month). It is true that no one in the Eugene area will touch it if it is under dealer warranty. If it isn't under warranty, then Noah at Auto Doctor is a genius & knows his stuff and the only one I would go to. I talked to Audi once and they have no plans for a Eugene area dealership; they had tried that awhile back and it didn't work out. Safest driving and handling car I have ever owned. I am a car enthusiast, had Alfa, BMW M3, Honda, Dodge, Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes and nothing beats Audi in quality and safety handling and has gotten me out of very hairy situations on I-5. The only thing that has ever come close that I have found so far is a Honda Ridgeline....weird...

I once had to get it towed to Sunset Beaverton (insurance covered it); and they were so nice they even offered to have their driver drive my rig back down to me for free. :) If you ever get a chance to drive one, it is a nice experience and you can tell that right away either as a passenger or the driver.

  10. I let him out tonight to go to the bathroom and play for a bit in the yard and he started to bark so I went out there to see what was going on and low and behold he was barking at my new neighbor looking over my fence!!!!

So now I have to add more trees in my backyard because of the "new guy" and he's already complaining that my dog was barking but he has a freakin' german shepard as well as a small dog that were barking too!!! I've lived here for 3 years and I don't know what type of seniority I have for this but I am not very happy about this. I have a feeling that this guy will sooner or later complain enough for me to get rid of my dog!

Ok so enough ranting on about this............anyone have any suggestions for me to deal with this guy.QUOTE]

Sad to hear this and to say that I have had your exact same problem. My advice will be in my story of what happened to me. You need to CYA, keep records (times and dates of irritating events), stick with the law and hold your neighbor to the same. Ask him to meet you at a local coffee shop on a Saturday (just you and him) so that you can go over the city rules and work together to find solutions. Keep notes, (take minutes records). You don't want escalate the situation because it will all by itself if you ignore it or if you add fuel to it. People have neighbor rage and shoot each other these days, and lack of sleep plus negative vibes is not a nice place to come home to at the end of the day. There is no point in retaliation, aggression, or moving house though I know exactly how you feel. If you will have neighbors in the new place you would move to, this may just repeat itself all over again anyway. No point in spending money on landscaping or anti-bark devices. 90% of the time, none of it works anyway. If you keep notes, you won't run the risk of having to 'get rid of your dog' by order of the courts.

    Here is my story:

Same kind of creepy neighbors except BOTH husband and wife kept peering over our joint fence and even into my house windows; they got two chihuahuas that constantly bark day and night at nothing and they never come out to reign them in, correct them or scold them. My dogs did not like their vibes, yet I corrected both dogs not to bark at them or their little dogs so they stopped. Rule number one: Never, ever, give your dog permission that a stranger is OK or a 'friend' if you don't really know them and you don't like them either. Dogs know things you don't and they react first on body language then on vibes. Some dogs will forever and always trust a stranger after you tell them that person is 'OK' as you try to be polite but not really meaning it.

I still got complaints posted on my door with no names of which neighbor was having a problem; I got letters sent from the city and warnings when I was at work. I had the entire back fence redone so that there were no spaces between the slats so the dogs could not see each other $500. I had trees planted $200. I tried bark spray collars $60 for my dogs and ultrasonic devices $120 to deter them. All the money and time I spent was for nothing. The neighbor kept peering over my fence and antagonizing my dogs; my dogs kept barking at them, and they kept sending in complaints. After a certain amount of complaints, you have to go to court.

Put a video camera up $150 and found that they let their kids and any of their guests throw things over the fence and into my back yard and dog kennel when I was not home. They threw socks, small rubber balls, golf balls, acorns and pine cones for my dogs to chew and choke on. I finally put up a video camera with sound because of the stuff i was finding in my yard and the fact that my dogs would never bark when I was at home so I couldn't understand why they would when I was gone. Found out that my dogs do not bark unless antagonized, and are otherwise quiet. Had to take my dogs into the vet from the poisoning from the acorns and the pine cone needles puncturing their intestines $500. Golf balls and small rubber balls are choking hazards. I was livid beyond belief because my dogs are a part of my family and were getting harrassed and abused by bulling/control freak neighbors who did not do anything to control their own dogs or kids.

Went to court, all the judge tried to do was to get us to 'work together' to 'find a solution' and 'be friends' despite all the evidence. Fence, Trees, Video Camera, Court, Sheriff, Vet bills....everything did not work. No use spending good money on trying to appease and change a weird situation where the weirdness is with other people because people don't/won't change. My neighbor had pictures of my house, backyard and would video tape my dogs barking at him as he is hanging over the fence video taping them as 'proof' that they bark. Ridiculous.(nutty)

The only thing that worked was the law and confronting them face to face and telling them how it is (always backed by the law). Do not be mean or agressive but be firm and absolute. Some cities have noise ordinances. My city has a noise curfew from 9pm until 7am the next morning, so my dogs sleep inside my house at night so there is no chance of barking during that time. There is an ordinance that if a dog barks for half an hour or at a certain frequency of how many times per five minutes than it is reportable as a barking dog noise violation. There is an ordinance that says dogs are not to be unsupervised for longer then 24 hours otherwise it is considered animal abandonment. So, I take them with me on trips where I will be gone longer than that.

See what your city ordinances are, and use them. Knowledge is power. Ignore stupid bullying complaints where you and your dogs are not doing anything illegal. For example, my dog barks at kids screaming on the side of the fence- not a reportable offense.

I confronted my neighbor about all the laws and how it applies to them and that I will follow the ordinances but I will hold them strictly to it too; and about privacy and that the next time they spy on me, I am calling the cops and reporting them as a 'peeping tom'. Also told them, the neighbor kids (and with the help of the sheriff)- told them that the next time they abuse or harass my dogs I will get them formally charged with animal abuse and cruelty.

Nothing worked, except for the half hour sitdown at the coffee shop. Now, my neighborhood is quiet and the complaints have stopped. We have not had a problem with each other for almost 6 months now so it was worth the effort. :)

  11. Hi Everyone,

I wanted to thank you all for your generous offers and help. The fish was just picked up by the owner, and it was alive when it left and doing very well thanks to the submersible kitchen dish idea. :) WHEW!

I used a stainless steel pasta strainer and found that the fish was suffering from acute ammonia toxicity. It could not tolerate any trace of ammonia in its water and was so stressed that it would foul seven gallons of freshly cooked saltwater in less than two hours, with spikes up to 0.25..... I did three water changes in its tub and a 20% water change on my tank before submersing the fish in it.

    Best,

    Stefanie

  12. Hey there,

I picked up a fish up from Portland yesterday for a friend and they have been unable to come and get it. Is there anyone in the Eugene area that would be able to house a Potter's Angelfish in a real tank? I floated him in my sump yesterday, moved him to a cooler last night after acclimating him and he is now in a tub but he really needs to go into a tank. I can't put him in mine because I have a flame angelfish. Please get back to me if you can take him, I feel so bad for this fish and he is really struggling. (scary)

    Thank you,

    Stefanie

  13. Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Aqua Serene in Eugene, OR is having a sale on all of their salt. I stopped by today and saw Kent brand salt buckets for $51 each.
