  1. Nice job and tell your wife good job on the pics!! Did you use anything to apply pressure to the seams as they dried or just use the corner clamps?

just what you see in the pics.

the corner clamps at the top and the 2 other clamps at the bottom.

made sure the spacing was the same all the way down.

    seemed to work great

if I put anymore pressure I was afraid it would push all the silicone out of the seem. I did not use spacers.

  2. Well the time has come to start a second tank in the house. We have been remodeling and there was some wasted space in the room sharing a wall with our kitchen so we decided to put a tank there. My wife and I have always wanted a tank with 10 or more clowns with anemones and some other softies. Maybe some Ricordeas, mushrooms and some Zoas in between the space we were going to put it was going to need a custom tank and we are cheep. So here is the build of that tank.

    Materials

    Glass

    1 Piece 16 x 20 (bottom)

    2 Pieces 16 x 30 (sides)

    2 Pieces 19 1/8 x 30 (sides)

All bought from Farrels Glass in Medford Oregon

let me just say these pieces were cut perfect!

all five pieces are out of 3/8 non tempered

    Cost $150.

    Corner clamps

    Harbor Frieght

    Item 1852

    Cost $2.99 Each used 4

    Silicone

    Momentive RTV 103

    Grainger Medford Oregon

    Item 4UH10

Cost $9.99 Each Bought 3, Used half of one(I guess I got extra if anyone needs it(laugh))

Enough boring words here are some pics.

    41Gallon1.jpg

here I am dry fitting everything to make sure all the edges line up

    41gallon2.jpg

here is the dry fit complete

    41Gallon3.jpg

Dry fit complete. 12 oz soda can for size comparison

    41Gallon4.jpg

then we pulled the whole thing apart and started siliconing

this was the first pic we could get because my wife was helping me hold glass up as I was placing the clamps

    41Gallon5.jpg

Got to get those edges perfect! not sure why. you can't see them once the tank is in the wall(nutty)

    41Gallon6.jpg

"Oh that looks nice" that is what I am thinking by the way.

    41Gallon7.jpg

    41Gallon8.jpg

here is where the Tank is going to go

    view from the kitchen

    41Gallon9.jpg

    View from the office

    41Gallon10.jpg

I will get wider view pictures but the rooms were a mess.

Tonight I am going to seal the Tank.

right now I just siliconed the flat joints. With the clamps I could not see an easy way to drag my finger all the way up the inside, so I thought I would do it in to stages.

after tonight there will be a 2 week cure period and then maybe a 3 or 4 day leak test. I hope these pictures get it by until then.

I also have to finish out the drywall but I thought I would wait until the tank was done so that I can make sure it fits perfect.

I also have to drill the base for overflow and install that. not sure where the edges of the stand are going to be so I am holding off on that too.

I also have to figure out a stand of some sort for the office side of this build.

  3. it might be a little high in the tank. that is why it looks like just the parts that the light is shining on are a little whiter. then again it could just be the picture.

I would double check your water temp. after you check your water temp check it again.

do this with 3 different temp gauges too.

  4. I really like the idea of a section about home built tanks!

no I really did not expect anyone to change the title of their threads. I was really just making an observation and see if it is me that is backwards or if other people find them self going into a "build thread" and after the 10th page it is a store bought tank.

    maybe it is just me.

  5. I am not talking down to anyone who puts a system together. I did the same thing. But I would not label a thread. "90 Gallon tank Build Thread"

that is like buying a mobile home, moving it onto some land. Hooking up the sewer, water, and electric and saying you built a house. Well we moved the furniture in it, and I built the stairs that go to the front door.

I enjoy seeing people put systems together and see what lights, skimmers, etc that they use. I think a better label for the thread would be "90 Gallon assembly thread" or something like that.

Just because you don't "build" your tank, doesn't mean you aren't building your system. By assembling your stand, putting the tank on it, hooking all of the plumbing up and everything else in between, you are "building" your system.

I think you are pretty lonely up there.

Building a tank could have many different meanings, while I did not build our 40b, I helped build the stand, I did build the stand the frag tank is on, and I assembled the plumbing, in my mind, I "built" our system. So therefore, it's a "BUILD" thread.

  6. I am glad that everyone enjoys the build threads but I must not have gotten my point across. I enjoy "build" threads also. they are great to read and follow along, and the pictures are great.

    HERE WAS MY POINT

when it the title it says for example.

    "250 gallon build thread"

one would assume that person is "building" the tank. when in fact all they are doing is putting store bought parts together.

I wish the title would read "250 Gallon assemble thread"

it would make it easier when looking for info on "building" a glass aquarium.

is there something I am missing.

if someone is building a tank from scratch should it say DIY in the title or something?

do you all get where I am coming from or do I stand alone?

  7. so a threat of personal harm or something like that?

I take it even jokingly will be taken seriously? seems a little extreme but rules are rules. I figured the rule that was broken was in the rules but I did not know which one. Well let this be a lesson then. looks like there is no tolerance for that kind of thing. I have heard a lot of people moving from RC to R2R and here because of their crazy guidelines and rules. A threat rule does not sound like a bad rule.

  8. LOL I thought someone got a Miami hurricane challis for Christmas. I wanted to check it out. I see I was wrong. I have this Challis in my tank so I was not jealous. now I see you went to Miami. I am jealous. I can not compete with that! someday.........

  9. My neon green candy cane was one of my first frags and it's been through a lot as I was learning... they're pretty hardy. I think the best thing to do is keep your water quality pristine' date=' and keep it in one place without messing with it. Then get it to spot feed if you can. Always brought mine back[/quote']

I agree with this but I would also try low light. I have gotten candy canes that look way worse then this come back so you should have no issue.

try dipping them in CoralRX per instructions, and put them at the bottom of your tank. what lights are you running?

then what Polythene Pam said. leave them alone. glue them if you have to. the more they get knocked around the worse. spot feeding at night is very helpful also

let us know how they turn out.

  10. I am using black.

you had the 108 and 103 backwards for the color but I figured it out LOL

the tank is going to be an inwall tank and you will be able to see it from 2 differnt rooms. the kitchen and the office.

the tank is going to be 20 wide by 16 wide by 30 tall

  11. yes I saw your build thread. I already asked you about silicone!

ordered it from Granger down here in Medford. I went and picked up the glass on my lunch hour. probably going to start siliconing it together in the next week or so. I can't wait! it is going to be sweet......

nothing like putting a tank in the wall in the kitchen! I have a Great Wife!

going to plumb it into my existing 90 gallon about 25 feet away. will have to run the plumbing under the house.

  12. So I am going to "Build" my own tank. I mean buy the glass and glue it together and say a few prayers and hope to stays together. Ok I have done research I am sure it will be fine and I plan on doing a BUILD thread for it so that people can look at it for a laugh or to learn something.

I do searches and there are tons of "build" thread about people putting tanks together.

Does this bug anyone else, or just me?

  13. I have never been stung at all. my brother got stung by a hammer. I wear them because I have noticed that when I frag and work it my tank the corals do not get hurt. I work on cars every so often also. So for me it is to keep my tank and coral clean. try and keep the oils and other things off the corals when I touch them. I know people say wash your hands. I do but when you work on cars it is hard to get it all out of your finger nails and everything.

  14. I have some blue candy cane, yellow toad stool, mushrooms, zoas, birds nest, and a bunch of other stuff.

I may be heading to Clackamas this weekend for a calcium reactor.

let me know I could drop them off for you. also have zenia, several leathers

let me know what you are looking for.

I had this same thing happen 2 years ago.

luckily my brother and I share when we get new stuff so I had a back up of most everything. although all of my LPS and softies lived.
