  1. Sigh. More football. Yawn.

    The Mariners are playing the Yankees Saturday. Go M's!! We're on a 2 game winning streak! And only second-to-last in the AL standings (yes Baltimore sucks more than we do).

    I <3 Ichiro. Will wear my jersey on Saturday. :)

  2. Finally made it down to Garrett's, great guy, nice setup, and awesome stuff! I'm loving the frags we got there - very healthy. The baby sure loved playing in the sprinkler on his lawn, too.

    Also thanks to Beth, Kim & their puppy for the ride down there!

    Finally, a thanks to the Nano Reef for some illustrious black eggcrate and delicious baked goods! :)

    PS, wait til y'all see what we got from Sarcastic Corals!

  3. Sounds like Eric might have already addressed this with you, but for others out there wondering something similar - if you give it a nudge, does it retract into a skeleton? I posted a similar picture on NR awhile ago and everyone said VERY definitively that what I had was a majano and to nuke it. Eventually I found some previous thread about distinguishing between majano and small plate corals... lo and behold, mine was actually just a small plate coral that would retract into it's skeleton if agitated (a majano doesn't have a skeleton).

  4. I don't think that's it- I don't see anything that looks like any sort of pitting. It's more subtle than that. It's kind of a whitish faded patch, almost kind of fuzzy looking. Kendra's trying to take a picture right now, but she's zipping all over the tank with the clowns. :)

  5. Our new baby tang has a small patch of something near her face. It's like a slightly faded patch on the part of her face that's black, over her eye. I'd snap a photo, but she swims too fast. :)

    At first, I thought she had a couple of damaged scales- perhaps from when she was bagged up or transported to our tank. Over the last couple of days, I've watched the patch get bigger, so I think it's probably either a bacterial infection or a fungal infection of some sort.

    She's eating well and seems very active. Aside from keeping a close eye on water parameters, what should we do for her? A google search suggested feeding less meaty food (she does love the mysis shrimp) and more nori, and adding garlic. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Gillian

  6. Thanks, everyone! Here are some pics of the build. Alex, I'm eventually going to see if i can build something with an arm off of the back so that you can see the rimless better, but I don't think I'll suspend it.

    Here is the sketch of what I had intended to do. The buckpucks have external potentiometers prewired to them that I didn't draw out, but that's how the lights dim:

    First I drilled and tapped the heatsink for the mounting screws:

    After cleaning the surfaces, I stuck the thermal adhesive pads on, and stuck the LED stars on those:

    This is out of focus, so you might not notice that I didn't stick them on like I had planned! DOH! This would not be realized until later, after I wired it:

    And then found that only half of both the blues and whites worked: (scratch)

    Went back to my sketch and realized my error, rewired, and... (clap)

    The good news is that my error gave me the opportunity to rewire everything, and I was much better at soldering by that point!! The bad news is that if I had taken the time to drill & tap for the LED stars, I could have changed their orientation more easily, but I used the adhesive pads... so they are ON there (for real). But it's not the biggest deal, just a little extra wire.

    Updates on the tank cycle... colors were a little different in person, so trust me on the numbers! Also, I had added some fresh shrimp:

    July 23:

    Ammonia ~ 1.0

    Nitrite ~ 0.25

    Nitrate = 10-20

    July 28:

    Ammonia = 0-0.25

    Nitrite = 0

    Nitrate = 20+

  7. hey eric, we have your full moons! they are glued to a rock right now, but they might not have grown onto the rock yet so i can see if i can pop them off and get a frag for you. i fragged them once before for the share the love but they've grown some since then too. hope all is well with the baby!

  8. That's about what our rock looked like when we "adopted" our first tank earlier this year. We did regular water changes with RO/DI water, added to the cleanup crew, and everything started looking much better within a couple of weeks. We are newbies, too, but if it were me, I wouldn't do anything drastic. ;)
