My 90 gallon got a good head start from 3 year old rock from Kat's old tank...and came into healthy parameters within 10 days. The rock had a considerable amount of pink corraline on it already.
Bowing to the influence of the internet....I dropped 20# of garf grunge on top of the sand....I love love rubble look.
Now I'm getting new colors every day.....even on some fresh rock I added. I've got 4-5 colors of coralline...from the original pink to bright red to several shades of purple.
Last week a mossy green color started developing on the tops of the rocks....a textured covering like coralline. The last couple days a yellow shade has developed.
Is this normal? Is it another version of coralline or something else?(scratch) It looks real cool!!!

Ok....I'm not the dullest tool in the shed...but could someone give me the "How To For Dummies" version....I still don't get it. Over.....

Depends on your fish load / coral load. Lower SG = more dissolved oxygen' date=' so its better to run fish only tanks at 1.019 ish. Higher SG allows for a higher concentration of calcium, magnesium, etc, which coral prefers.[/quote']
Are these the only pros and cons to be considered......or are there more?(scratch)

I've got a 95 gallon that was set up 9 days ago with 3 year old rock. It's brown right now but might be in shape to hold some stuff by then. The snails and crabs are doing fine! I'll test the ammonia and nitrate and get back to you. It's totally empty now with lots of lite!

I guess it worked...I'll bet there are better ways to post pics.

Where to buy this waterlox? I am caveman when come to finishing.
dsoz
Woodcraft in Portland has it. They were out of stock when I ordered, so I had it shipped up from the Eugene store. My cabinet is 72", with an 18" x 72" canopy....and I'll use up most of 2 quarts.
Do not use the marine grade....use the original formula. Whatever creates the extra UV protection in the marine grade actually softens the finish...the original is the toughest.
For staining use Watco oil...if they have an acceptable color. It's very easy to get an absolutely even stain job with the oil.
-
In researching the most durable finish for my tank stand and hood......something that would look like fine furniture yet stand up to saltwater...I came across WaterLox.
It's a tung oil based product sorta like Watco...but much easier to apply and much tougher. 3 coats with a brush looks hand rubbed...the product builds real fast and dries in 24 hours. I sanded lightly with a ScotchBrite pad between the 2nd and 3rd coat.
Even a caveman could get a great looking tough as nails finish with this product!!

It looks like all the pieces are in place for the start of my 90 gallon room divider reef tank.
Paul at Natural WoodCrafters delivered my cabinetry last nite....and the stain is on as we speak. Gonna be finished in WaterLox...sorta like Watco but much tougher. It's supposed to flip saltwater the finger!! I'll try and share photos of the process....as it's 3 coats with steel wool in between.
Hopefully the cabinet and tank will be installed and full of water by mid-week. Then the fun begins(nutty)

Light has arrived....a quality piece of gear. I should have had Joel autograph it...as it's one of the first run!!

This is the same phenominon that causes airplanes to fly... air moves faster over the top of the wing creating a lower pressure. The higher pressure on the bottom of the wing pushes the airplane up.
HTH
dsoz
Yup....even works flying upside down.....or straight up! Hard on inexperienced passengers, tho.....(scary)

And we have a winner....Garrett!!!
Thanks to Garrett for stepping up to the plate and becoming our Rod's Food dealer.....enabler....pusher....whatever!!!!
Now....let's all support him so it's always "fresh" when we need it!!(clap)

That idea was mine I tell ya!!!DOH!

Assemble 1200 lbs of your pals in that spot....move around. Feel any motion?? Any creaks or groans??? Bounce up and down on the balls of your feet. Still no movement??? Should be good!!
Also you could put a partially full container of water down....watch for the water slosh when moving and bouncing around!

We're in....let us know where and when!

If you're ever coming down to Salem to visit Sully or Garrett on a weekend......throw that Tele in the back seat and come over.....maybe we can write a song about reefer madness...er..um..I mean reef madness(whistle)!!!
Seriously...I love to play.....no great shakes but I hold my own on rythym....and would enjoy having you over. I'll plug you into a Dr. Z amp and see how good that Tele really sounds.
I'll warn you right now that Jimmy Buffet, Johnny Cash and Cross Canadian Ragweed is about as country as I get!
