  1. I had this same problem!! Last month, I bought some GFO from bulkreefsupply for the first time. I was getting a tiny bit of algae to I thought the GFO might help. I thought I had properly read about it and how to use it. In a day or two, my entire birdnest had RTN on the entire thing! My dkh was also down to 7! It took some figuring, reading and researching, but I finally discovered that I should have used only half of the recommended amount to start with, then slowly increased the amount of GFO. Apparently, it cleaned my water way too fast. I would have considered my BN to be pretty hearty, I have far more sensitive SPS in the tank. I almost lost the stylo too, but that bounced back.

Live and learn I guess, well, my birdsnest could not say the same thing. DOH!

  2. Interesting! I was considering emailing the company myself. Mine have crumbled a little, but are still whole. However, both of mine will no longer hold the corals. On one I put a $500 efflo, and on the other a nice tenius. Both corals are little mini colonies, nothing huge by any standards - yet they are now too heavy to be held up by the magnets. The rocks have to rest on other rockwork in order to not fall down. It looks dumb, and not at all what I envisioned. I actually took one out last night.

  3. I really like the trochus snails. Picked some up from Garrett last fall after reading how much others loved them. One became a hermit shell almost immediately, but I still have the other two. They are great algae eaters, and I love that they can right themselves - makes them WAY better than the turbos!

I love my conch snail. Never had a problem with him moving things. I just think he is so cute w/ his little eyeballs and elephant trunk snout.

I had a dragon goby that was keeping everything nice, and was very cool to watch. His only downside was he made the tank cloudy, but after having him for a month or so it got much better/cleaner. In the 3 1/2 years I've been reefing, I lost two fish. One the first summer, a blue damsel (good riddance) got overheated in my tank. AND, the dragon goby mysteriously died. No clue as to why, so I'm very hesitant to get another.

  4. Ok, I haven't updated my build thread in forever, and now it's time to close it. Just moved into the upgrade last night, I'll start a new thread for that because it's AMAZING!! lol

Anyway, here are a few pics of the final product of the 75.

  5. I agree that there are some down sides to something like this, such as not being able to see sooooo much of what is there - but it sure beats any koi pond I've ever seen! And I'm jealous of how he did water changes. ;)

  6. Bumping this up for a question on chiller size. 90 gallon tank w/ 35 gallon sump, 2 inch sand bed and tons of live rock in both tank & sump, not really sure how many actual gallons. A 1/10 or a 1/4 chiller? House gets super hot in the summer, I'm working on those issues but want to make sure I get a chiller that can handle the high temps. Thanks.

  7. Ok, so when I wrote this thread I had not yet bought the 90 gallon. As of last night, with a huge thanks to Cos from Ocean in a Box for the delivery, (rock2) I am now the proud owner of a 90 gallon Oceanic Tech Tank w/ Starphire glass on 3 sides. Woo-hoo!!!!! Robert & Cos are going to order me a Mag 25 this week, and my husband is going to get a stand from them today. I am really looking forward to changing my build thread from my 75 to the new & improved 90! (clap)

  8. Wow, I think this is my neighbor's tank... (scratch) I haven't seen it in a while since he's away on business. Didn't know he was selling it all, sad. I can vouch for a nice tank, it was what got me into the hobby originally.

  9. I was just at Alex's house today, should have asked him. I'll look into it, thx. We've been on the fence about controllors too, I might do it. I also want vortechs too though lol. DOH! For lighting we are going to use what we have, dual 250 watt phoenix 14k w/ 2 48" uvl 454 t5. Just got new bulbs. I've seen Kim & Beth's light though, that thing is sweet.

The sump we found on amazon, search "ADHI Refugium Model 30" there. I thought about having one made but we already bought this one, I really liked it.

  10. Sorry to hear about your tank, but THANKS for the great deals! I had no idea you were running the sale when we came in. All I can say is WOW we feel like we robbed you! LOl ;) The blue tenius came with an acro crab, SOOO cool! I am absolutely facinated by the symbiotic relationships in this hobby, so that was a great bonus, on top of all the other bonuses!! (clap) Thanks again for everything, especially letting me use your shop as a drop off point, which is I why I came by in the first place. (laugh)

  11. Looking to do an upgrade, and getting some new equipment also. Let me know what you think:

    90 gallon tank

New sump: ADHI Refugium Model 30:

New Reef Octopus Needle Wheel Skimmer up to 150 gallons:

What submersable pump would I need to go from this sump to the 90 gallon/how do I figure this out? 4-5 feet up to the display. Also, questions on calcium reactor. We found this one by AquaC:

What would you get? Thoughts please.
