  1. I feel like as aquarists we rely too much on numbers. And this is even more true when it comes to Nitrates.

I have read studies (about the effect of nitrates in reef aquaria and coral aquaculture) saying that they are terribly bad, some that say the opposite and some that were unable to get to a real conclusion.

I have seen friends killing tanks for the quest of a specific number, while not seeing that the issue was elsewhere.

Is-it really that number (which is provided by a consumer grade test) that is making part of your sps population not thriving?

How about all the other factors, like positioning, flow, the history of each specimen?

From what I can see your aquarium looks just great.

All that said, if I read it well you have a lot of turnover. Water moving so quickly between display and sump generates O2 (mechanically). What does all that extra O2 do when it meets the nitrogen in your tank? Do you remember the so called trickle filters in the 90's? Slow it down (I run the water in my display only once per hour in my filtration system) and wait. Keep up with the rest of the routine maintenance and you will see NO3 going magically down ;-)

    I hope this helps

  2. Yesterday I was at The Premium aquarium and Garrett just had some amazing corals in. Worth the visit for who is coming from South. I will swing by Cuttlefish after the meeting for some more great stuff. Then put the family on rice diet for a bit ????

  4. After 3+ year of hiatus we are finally back into the reef world! We moved back to Portland from San Diego in May and we are now in the process of building our new aquarium room.

I thought to post in this section because I have been to a meeting recently and I saw a lot of new faces so many of you don't know us.

The old friends here at PNWMAS were as great as we remembered!

So let me introduce myself :-)

My name is Alex and in 2008 I joined PNWMAS and I served as a Board Member and Vice President. Me and my wife Jamie were very active into the club life until 2013, when we had to quickly relocate to SD for work.

I have run aquariums (planted, fresh and reef) for more than 30 years and I enjoy the challenge of this wonderful hobby and now I would love to pass it down to my son.

Right now we are finishing our tank room and we are hoping to have water in the tanks in about 3 weeks.

It is a pleasure to be back in the Pacific Northwest and to join this wonderful "fish" community again.

We are on the same boat! I need to get one.

It took me 4 years to master a charcoal grill and now seems that I can do better with less effort. I have baby back ribs on the weber right now :)

    I'm not italian anymore...
