  1. PM sent... I'm open to reasonable offers and I'll consider parting out.

Oh that's no fun. ;). You need at least a couple of Craigslist offers. I'll give you $0.76, 23 ft of weed eater string, a 40x12.50R16 tire with 35% tread left, two laying hens and a carb from my Husky chainsaw. Deal?

  2. That is some pretty good spread from that one' date=' light how is the disco effect? It does seem to have a pretty good color =)[/quote']

I'm not seeing any disco effect - it looks very similar to a halide other than the extra shimmer. The more I look at it the more I'm liking it. It looks much more natural than the box of light look of my other tank. If it grows SPS, then I will be stoked.

  3. The new Kessil showed up today. This is a standard 40B tank. It is worth noting that all the photos were with my IPhone so nothing was adjusted.

Frag tank with 100 watt compact bulb (sump light). Also room lights are on in this photo so that makes everything look brighter than it really is.

Kessil at about 25% power both channels and other lights off.

    100% power both channels.

I gotta say the shimmer from this light is incredible. Never seen a halide like this. Overall the power seems good, but it doest appear as bright as my 250 DE halides. Very impressive though for such a small fixture. I will be playing with it more to see if I can tweak the colors to match my Phoenix bulbs. Also I will take some more photos in manual mode with the DSLR so you can get a more accurate representation of the brightness.

  4. You should check out used fixtures to save some $$. Many people (myself included) are switching to LED and selling off their old lights for cheap. For example I have a Current Outer Orbit Pro 2x250 MH + 4x54 T5 fixture that I expect to get around $300 for. This was a $1000 light a few years back.

Mines not ready to sell yet, but it is a good example what is out in the used market if you are looking at halides or T5.

  5. One question tho' date=' how are you going to connect the float switch to the plug? Are you going to put both wires from the float switch on the same tab on the connector? [/quote']

No they don't go on the same tab. One wire goes on the ground and the other on the positive. Doesn't matter which one goes where but they need to be separate.

  6. So Nate' date=' what did you do with the ground?[/quote']

Here are a couple of photos of the inside while I was putting it together. The ground is pin # 8 which was the purple wire on the cable I purchased. For the jacks I used a larger diameter wire as the common ground. It is the black wire in the photos. The purple wire is soldered to the common ground.

A better set of instructions is in the Apex New User manual pages 118-121:

  7. That looks great! Where did you get the parts to make this? I have been looking everywhere for a mini din 8 connector. I can't seem to find one here in Eugene. Also I see you only have 6 plugs. What are you doing for the other two? I know pin number 7 is reserved but what about pin number 8 (ground)?

Wannareef is correct about the pins. I got most of the parts from Radio Shack, but it is probably less expensive to buy off eBay or Amazon. I got the mini din off Amazon. It was under $3 and I had free Prime shipping.

  8. Anyone have a Kessil A350 or A350w? I'm going to make the LED jump and these look pretty impressive. I have added them to my list of potential fixtures. There are quite a few threads on RC, but I haven't seen one in person and wanted to see if anyone locally had experience with them.

  9. how you like that doser? they seem to be the best stand alone doser out.

It's very nice. Easy to setup and program. My only minor complaint is that I can't tie it into the Apex. But then again that is my complaint with everything. I would run my whole house off the Apex if I could. :)

  10. The breakout box is only 40 bucks. how much was the parts to make this?

Less than $20 and maybe an hour of time. For me it wasn't about saving the money. I'm not a fan of the spring close type connections that the Neptune box uses. I find them unreliable and it is too easy for the wires to fall out. I also like that the DIY box is much smaller and can be sealed to prevent moisture issues.

  11. Here is my QT tank. 40B with 29 sump.

And here are both tanks in the "hobby room". (Also the only room in the house that I have full claim to.)

  13. Looks great-whats it do or control?

I have an APEX as well am curious if it is something I would have a need for.

    TIA

Thanks. You can connect just about any continuity type switch to it. I'm going to use it for float switches and eventually a Water Bug. You can also use for push button switches to initiate feedings or pump modes, or hook it up to door switches to turn on / off lights.

  14. Put together a breakout box for my Apex tonight. Can't take any credit for the design as I just duplicated what others have already done. I did use a smaller box than most of the DIY threads I have seen. I think it turned out nice. The only thing I'd do differently is use a black cord so it matches better. Here are a few photos.

My wife would beat me. Im already at my tank limit. I need to stay on her good side, since I still have approval for an in wall build.
