Temporarily they will do fine on less but in the long run 8 hours is minimum I think. I never run less than 10 hour photo periods for my corals unless very temp. This is what I typically do and am doing now since I just upgraded to 400 watt mh from 175 watt mh. I started at 4 hours and will be working my way up 30 min per week untill I see my acros start to lighten, at that point (when the corals start to lighten) I back off about 30 min and watch it for another week. I would kick it down by an hour or two on the halides, but I have seen system run with a 14 hour photo period and have some of the best success out there.
