reef-fisher
Whats the deal with Mantis shrimp? Why do they have to be kept by themselves? Is it only because they eat critters, or will they mow down on corals too? What about linking a small tank to a larger system? will there be any issues? Thanks, Ben
Ron Popeil
mantis shrimp are harmless to corals. they are just devastating to most invertebrates and fish. your smaller species will probably only harm snails and hermits, leaving fish alone. but larger species, like the flashy peacock mantis will destroy every fish it can reach. fascinating creatures! reef-fisher
Are there any special requirements other than a separate tank? Special foods?
callen
They will eat anything meaty from shrimp, crab, fish, krill. Any of the meaty frozen foods will work. They need a cave and IMO are fascinating buggers.
Jay
I introduced one tiny tiny one to my tank months ago. A gift from Alex at seahorse one day when I was there. Its still in my tank someplace Im sure but I never see him. He is probably just sitting in some crevace getting big enough to harpoon one of my fish someday : ). Colerful little buggers.
