diverdown
Is it true bangii's are going to be put on the endangered species list this year? (scratch)
defigart
I haven't heard anything like that. It really takes alot for a species to be added to the list. They have been captive bred so they should be available, just the price will go up.
impur
These can be bred in captivity. That said, I can only find info that states the fish is close to be endangered.
Michael7979
Yet another reason to look for captive bred and raised items whenever possible.
andy
I've heard about this too; I thought the latest CITES was going to include them, but apparently not. I was considering breeding Banggai, but from all that I've read doing so is a money-losing proposition -- broods are too small compared to the price of wild caught fish. We're going to see more and more of this kind of thing -- the latest I've read is that Hawaii may close down their fisheries. $150 Yellow Tangs, anyone? JManrow
When Bangaii Cardinals were first available in the 1990's, they sold retail for about $100 each as they were supposedly very rare. The price gradually dropped to about $35, then when reports of captive breeding came out, they were seen as low as $6.99 at some stores. What happened? It's hard to blame this on curio collectors and Traditional Chinese Medicine like seahorses. Could be that the wild source is getting on the threatened list totally because of the hobbyist trade this time. http://www.fishbase.com/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=15426
JManrow
What gets me, is after all the regulation of collecting wild caught seahorses, dried seahorses are still sold online at Sea Shell Suppliers, along with dried porcupine puffers, etc. (flame)
vanz
I never got into bangaii or any other cardinals. The reason was that in Hawaii, every time I go fishing, those guys keep jumping on my line. They were like trash kinda like blue gills. The worse part about them was the smell that emitted from their slime coat...it was nasty.

vanz
It was a red/brownish muddy colored cardinal. The boat dock by Ilikai Hotel and Hilton I believe was where we caught them.
Holly
maybe the cardinals enjoy being licked (whistle)
