Renter's insurance companies for reef tanks

If this is in the wrong section, please feel free to move it.

I have been shopping around for new renters insurance. Currently through State Farm, and my coverage is lacking in my opinion. They cover the tank and equipment of course. I am covered if other units are damaged in case of failure(not in an apartment so it doesn't matter), but they will not cover my house. I have spoken to my agent about adding a rider for that, but it is a no go. I have told they do not offer anything of that nature. They chances of damage is a long shot, but I prefer to be prepared if I can be.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a company to look into?

Thank you for the help,

JR

I don't think there were a lot of companies in this thread, but there was a lot of good information:

http://www.pnwmas.org/topic/37819-insurance/

I just read through that thread, and the only one mentioned is State Farm. I bet that isn't the case, and that member should double check with their agent. I had my agent double check with the underwriters, and they absolutely will not cover the unit you rent in the event of a failure.

This makes no sense to me, because why would I need your coverage if you aren't protecting my unit. They will cover everything, other than damage to my unit from a failure...

I think I am the only licensed insurance agent in the group so let me see if I understand correctly.

State Farm is saying that if you have an unintentional failure of your aquarium i.e. seal break, or overflow, that the liability portion of your policy would not cover damages to the property you are renting, but they would accept the liability to damage to other units caused by the failure? AND the policy would cover your tank/equipment that caused the problem.

Does the policy list a specific exclusion for water filled furniture?

I'd be happy to take a look at what your looking at and see if one of our policies would work for you. Feel free to PM me your number or email and we can look.

That is exactly what they are telling me. I'm not looking to get coverage for my negligence. I want to have coverage on my townhome in the event of a tank failure.  Below is my last correspondence with the agent the last line is where they don't cover damage to my unit. His thought is that the landlord's homeowners insurance would be covering the unit. However handling legal cases regularly, I know the landlord's insurance would be looking to recoup damages from me.

I have spoken to my claims team, and underwriters and we will not cover damage to the unit you are renting. I have included a copy of the policy itself below and highlighted the portion showing this exclusion. I would love to write your business but, do not want to mislead you in any way.
