I remember being on a field trip and a person coming back with mushrooms looking like this. They are Morels. They tend to come from areas that had a forest fire or are burned regularly.

They can grown in fresh burns, I find them in the forest. I find that chasing the burns creates pressure and I go to just kick around and relax. I end up getting all I want and even enough to dry some for the winter months. The spring Boletes are also out at this time and if morels A1 Boletes are A2.

 

If you have never picked please take an experienced person with you or join your local fungi club. The clubs make group forays into areas that have shrooms and they will help you identify what you've gathered. They will even take you to a place in OC in the dead of winter to look Oregon white truffles. I prefer the blacks but I don't find as many of those. I do my truffle hunting in southern Oregon though.
