Overflows

I have been looking at various different overflows.

One that caught my eye was the ones made by Creative Plastic Research, CPR. Is anyone using these here? What do you think of them. I have heard they have some problems that can be solved pretty easily.

What others are people using, and what do you like about them? What do you wish was different?

I can't remember what brand of overflow box I had.

The only thing I did not like was the noise. I did not know the trick to lessen the noise. So my tank gurgled. I also hated priming the overflow tubes. I finally learned a trick with saran wrap that worked most of the time. Make sure you get one that has enough flow to cover your return pump.

I have basically the CPR overflow, same style, different brand and have been happy with it. aquatraders.com has some cheap cpr knockoffs, not sure how good they are but I'd try one for the price. I have a hole in the top of mine like the CPR's, which is attached with airline tube to a powerhead. It starts on its own after power shutoff etc.. If you empty it totally you still have to do some mouth sucking action to get it going. The only thing I don't like about is the difficulty to clean it. Have to take off tank, attempt to jam stuff in there, hard to clean. That said I have never had to clean it, just wish I could occasionally without the dismantling. It's been running for 2.5 years or so with no big problems. I use the u-tube overlow on my second tank, easy to clean just pop of tube yada yada. Have a hole in u-tube attached to powerhead venturi in same fashion. Not sure what I'd do if I started over, drill holes probably. But i would like to try one of those aquatraders knock offs to. Happy reefing!
