sharoleb
This is kind of a dumb question, but one I'm going to ask anyway. I've got a 90 gallon glass tank. I have a mag float thingy that I always clean my glass with, but I've still gotten a build up of hard, green algaes, it may be corraline but it's green. It's getting hard to look through the sides of the tank. I know a razor blade will scrape it right off - but isn't it bad for metal to be in the tank?? Or is it ok if it's just a couple minutes? Or, is there another way to get the glass super clean?
Mitchell
I use an algae scraper with a metal blade and have never had any problems. As long as you use a stainless steel blade and wouldn't keep it in the tank for days on end it should be fine. impur
Its fine to use a razor blade to clean the glass. Just putting a piece of metal in the tank isn't the problem. The problem is that salt water corrodes the metal causing rust. The rust is what is bad for our tanks in large quantities. So really, if you put a razor blade in the tank and left it for several months, you would probably still be ok. Would I suggest you do this? Of course not. Also consider the granular ferric oxide (GFO) we use in our tanks to help with PO4 and NO3 is essentially rust.
omarortiz
You should be fine with a razor blade as long as it is made of steel. Just don't leave it in the tank or it will corrode. Kent makes a decent scraper that is made of metal for glass tanks. It provides better grip than a razor and you can also add a bunch of different handles/extensions. MVPaquatics
You are fine. I dont even think a rusting razor in the tank would cause much issue. Might even help red algaes lol
aquaman30k
Nice reply Miles! I use this gadget on my mag float to clean my glass weekly. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/easy-blade-algae-scrapers-black.htmlEasy blade algae scraper. Once I'm done using it I just wash it off with fresh water and dry off for future use.
