Drew
Would it be a good thing to add crushed coral to a sump? I got a few pounds left... trying to find a use for it.
tigerv503
Usually people put decent sizes live rocks in their sump, crushed corals is ok but make sure it doesn't shoot up your Nitrate. Also small crushed corals can get suck in by a return pump. Vin "Keep On Reefing"
Drew
If there is a chance of getting higher Nitrates thats enough not to do it.
ThePremiumAquarium
I would use live rock. Crushed coral allows for very aerobic denitriting bacteria to build up well. It converts nitrite into nitrate but then that has to be dealt with by anerobic bacteria in either you live rock or deap sand bed. If you put live rock in there instead then you will get not only the aerobic bacteria but also the denatrating anaerobic bactera The more live rock the better! Michael7979
I would go out and get some baseball sized rocks/rubble and use that instead of crushed coral substrate.
cklskypilot
I have my sump set up as a eco system with sand coral live rock and lots of plants/alge also a clean up crew. it works good for me. its also a good place to raise copepods. they seed the 180 gal and the 50 gal frag tanks through the pumps. Mohaynow
so while we're on the subject. Would rubble be too small, rubble being pieces marble sized and bigger?
Michael7979
so while we're on the subject. Would rubble be too small' date=' rubble being pieces marble sized and bigger?[/quote'] It would be OK IMO if there were some larger pieces also. Because I am always stealing those small pieces to use for frags. I can't do that with the larger pieces.
OwenReefin
I put a five pound container of refugium mud in my open fuge space in the sump. It is about 5 inch deep and claims to not only provide denitrification but also slowly leach essential minerals and trace elements into the system... We will see, the mangroves grow from it like weeds.
