ciao
I was wondering, what material do most people here keep their activated carbon in when in the water? I've been trying to find something that is fine enough to keep the carbon from spilling out of but big enough to hold all the carbon and have enough water going through. I would appreciate any suggestions on what's best and where to get it if possible Secondly, where do most people place their activated carbon? Do you put it directly underneath the return pipe carrying the overflow water?
bobkat330
i picket up a bag from lfs and it under my flow in my wet/dry back pack, but rinse the carbon off good before you put it in.
CCR
If using a bag . Don't over fill it. The center won't get flow. Personally I don't like bags. One big purpose of carbon it to strip,(polish) capture ultra file organics and particles from the water column. If you remove the bag you will see a lot of particles falling off, right back into the system. If your going to use the bag method then your really just using it for chemical absorbing. . andy
Fill a bag with carbon and toss the bag in your filter sock... assuming you use a filter sock of course
Algae
I've used nylon paint strainer bags and reusable zip ties (Harbour Freight).

Algae
Your kinda going in the wrong direction, IMHO. Powered by a powerhead (Maxi-Jet) or off a T in the sump return line. You are just pushing water through the media (carbon). Really simple principal.
undrtkr_00
Do you need a CO2 tank to run it in such a fashion? No, no. Just some water flow. CO2 is just for calcium reactors. Phos reactors, etc are really just a way to contain your media (phoslock, carbon, or whatever) while getting some water flowing through it. andy
"Media Reactor" is just the $40 word (literally!) for "plastic tube" :-D
reef165
Pantie hose, just cut off a leg at about the knee add some carbon then tie it off at the top. Don't over fill, just use a cup or two, then ya can place it almost anywhere, I used to use it like that in my overflow box hanging off my durso standpipe. Mandinga
I have tried the nylon pantyhose in my little 3G nano...the biggest risk is that the carbon will rip the pantyhose material... Mr S
I went to Wal mart and bought a yard of bridal veil for 98cents. Put carbon in and tie a string around it. I then put it in a high flow section in the sump.
