Nate213
Can anyone ID this coral? (Sorry for the bad photo, I took it with my phone.) I saw it at a local store this weekend. It is obviously bleached out, but otherwise looked alive. They had it labeled as a brain coral for $30. I was thinking of buying it and trying to recoup some color. Right now it is under some really cheap fluorescent lighting.

Nate213
I thought it looked like an acan, but Im still learning on how to ID them. It looked like it had good polyp extension. Would it be worth $30 for a mystery coral that could recover?
CA2OR
Might be better off trying to trade it or wait till it colors up a bit more. What kind of lighting do you have? Wait, you haven't bought it yet? MAYBE, I would try to talk price down or something but I am not familiar with Acan pricing.

Nate213
I have good lighting in my DT (Current Outer Orbit Pro 2x250 MH). I have had bad experiences with this LFS, so it would most likely go into the QT tank for a while. Not so great lighting on the QT. Just standard FW fluorescent bulbs. Looking to upgrade light though, so I can properly QT / acclimate corals. Do you think it would make it for several weeks in the QT, if I fed it properly? dsoz
NOOOOOOO! If you are going to do it, it should go into your display with the best conditions possible. Buying sub-par corals only encourages the practice of selling sub-par corals at those prices. With good care it MAY recover. It would take good lights, good feeding every day, and EXCELLENT water quality. Small uncooked meaty food (fish, shrimp, clams, etc) chopped up really fine and sprayed onto it is what it needs. Turn off all water movement for 10-15 min while it is being fed so it can grab on and ingest all the pieces. Every head/mouth should get some. Put it low in your tank, in the shade if possible with only a little bit in the light at first. Move it slowly (about 1/2 inch every other day) so it is more out in the light. Think about a super pale person going on vacation to a tropical place and forgetting sunscreen!!!! That would shock and be the death of that coral. I still don't think that you should do it, but if you do... Don't pay $30 for it. Tell the owner how bleached it is, and how it will likely die in his tank. Then be generous and offer $10 for it. Even go up to $15, but no more. If you want some good acans, go to Rose City Aquarium. They have an AWESOME selection of acans. Or bid on some in the auction from Ocean In A Box. There is an auction that ends next Sunday. You will pay more than $30, but you will have an acan that will be healthy. You can plan a trip to pick it up and save the shipping cost. dsoz
Nate213
Thanks for the tips dsoz. I agree with you on the purchase of selling sub-par corals, but this LFS isn't in the business of selling corals. I would guess that someone just brought it in for credit, or just to give away. There are very few customers up in this area for reef stuff, so the LFS only has one small coral tank. I was hoping I could get it for a excellent deal and help it recover. I dont trust the water quality from this store. They also have issues with pests / ick. If I bought it, I agree that it would be best to go into DT, but I dont want to risk any pest or disease transfer. If there is nothing that I can do to prevent a possible problem, then I will just pass altogether.
