finch6013 Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I am looking for a good calcium and alkalinity two part DIY recipe. Does anyone have one that they use and have good luck with it? also something that could dose magnesium would be great. I would like to save a little on dosing if possible Quote
Lowman Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Go to the reef chemistry forum on reef central there is a good one there http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php Quote
finch6013 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 where do you find it best to get the supplies? Quote
dsoz Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I use it too. You can get all the parts from LFS in the area. I know that Joel (waves) sells it in a re-fillable container. IDK if Bob sells it (probably), and you can get it from Bulk reef supply (dot com). dsoz Quote
finch6013 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 the link Lowman gave me seems like most of it comes from HD and the local store. What are you getting at the lfs? Quote
dsoz Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Same chemical, but of know purity. The stuff you get from HD is unknown purity, and not guaranteed to be safe for your tank. Although, the baking soda is probably food grade. If it is good enough for you to eat, then it should be OK in your tank. dsoz Quote
finch6013 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 I was thinking of using HD supplies to cut cost but it might be worth just getting the stuff from bulkreef Quote
dsoz Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Garrett85 was just selling some that he got at BRS. Let me look for the link... http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12016 get the calcium chloride and the sodium carbonate. dsoz Quote
finch6013 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 thanks for the link. I will hit him up. How much of each will be enough to last a while and not break the bank at the same time?(matter of opinion) Quote
dsoz Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I got one gallon of each, and have used about 1/4 of each in the two or three months that I have been using it. But I have two tanks, and one that sucks up the calcium like it was water. I under-dosed for a while, then I over-dosed for a while, now I am dosing a medium amount and think I have found the balance. Next time I am going to order two gal. of each so it will last a longer time. dsoz Quote
