  1. Awesome I might be doing this this week just need to find containers for all my water. Also what size do you reccomend. I'm finding 1 1/2" to possibly suitable but I'll need to do the math for a proper return pump
  2. Thanks for the advice. Ive only been cycling the tank for about a month. I want it all to be perfect before i start adding fish and corals.
  3. So i have a 40gal breeder that is filled with just H2O, LR & LS. Ive seen a few posts about how people have drilled it after emptying half of it and having success. Ive toyed around with the idea of a HOB overflow but have nightmares about it flooding. I know i should have thought about this prior to filling it but i didn't so here i am. I would like the clean look of drilled and adding the extra water volume will help with my filtration design and such so any input would be great. So two questions; Is it worth trying to empty half of it and drill it? Should i just take it all out and drill it on its back like i should have to begin with? Would this make me have to re-cycle it, after mixing all the sand and such? Thanks for the help in this time of need.
  4. Thanks for the info! I plan on stocking some by the end of this month given that my tank is don't cycling. Also want to throw on an overflow box to a sump to get extra volume and filters going. I'm going filter less now but seem by adding the sump I'll have better quality.
  5. Just curious as I'm about to start stocking my tank here in a little bit but curious as to know if anyone adds any extra nutrients to their tank besides the salt they use. Im using Red Sea Pro salt and mainly want a softies tank with a few SPS but dominantly Zoas and Shrums and some LPS. Anyways just trying to get some input on what you've noticed with growth and development with some extra supplements. Thanks for any info!!
  6. Want to trade? HAHA i don't have that kind of cash on hand right now maybe by the end of the month.
  7. Thanks! Any ideas on this skimmer? Has good reviews just wanted to see if anyone has had first hand experience with the AquaC Remora Hang-On Protein Skimmer w/ Cobalt Aquatics MJ1200?
  8. Looking to just filter my 40breeder using a protein skimmer would the AquaC Remora Hang-On Protein Skimmer w/ Cobalt Aquatics MJ1200 work well for this? It has good reviews but looking for anyone currently using it or that would recommend it. Found one on Craigslist for a good price and wondering if I should snag it
  9. I'll check that out and probably try to snag a piece of LR from a local reefer. Woke up this morning to a crystal clear tank. And just curious but wouldn't adding a protein skimmer take away from the filter less concept? Also i haven't found any decent HOB skimmers that aren't crazy expensive but I guess the same would apply to in sump skimmers. Haha
  10. So just moved here with my wife and of course had to start the tank as soon as possible. So i dried out my rock from when it was previously set up and finally mixed the salt, added the sand, and had the rock churning in a rubbermaid for a week before adding, why? I don't know but i felt like it would be helpful. So I'm running LEDS custom build with an assortment of brands including Rapid Leds. I got it on a sunrise sunset timer and keeping my whites at 30% capacity. Im waiting for some spikes in levels and some constants before i add anything. Any advice on things to try out? How to quicken things up? Im kind of anxious but happy i got this far. Also have an ATO system hooked up and just running an HOB filter with carbon. Trying to be a minimalist and potentially go filterless all together and just do water changes. Also Im using Red Sea Max Coral Pro salt mix keeping my salinity at 1.025-.027. Also if anyone knows how to upload pics so they're under 2KB?? Thanks
  11. Haha well awesome! I shall start over, thanks for the help! Now looking back I've always filled the tank before salt, I guess I just got excited...
  12. Ive started mixing my 40gal breeder but what i did was add the salt i needed, or at least what i thought would be about 35gal worth and them had my RODI dripping into it, Ive got about 30-35 gal full with three power heads but its still cloudy after 3 days of mixing. Ive measured it and its at 1.019 right now and i don't want to add salt due to the obvious salt that hasn't disolved yet. I got all the powerbeads toward the bottom to keep the salt from settling but just curious if its a waiting game or what. Any experience or advice would help. Ive set up about 4 tanks but never tried to just mix this quantity at once. So i wouldn't consider myself a noob just stuck. Thanks!
  13. I decided to throw my rock in a bucket with water and PH. And I'll check the phosphates after a week of it cycling and see where I'm at. I didn't dose anything, I got this idea from Upscales so we'll see what happens, also checking my salinity in my display with it clearing up nicely. Hopefully I'll be adding sand today.
  14. Do you know the link? I'm on reef central but not reef2reef
  15. Ill check Upscales in Tualatin, it just sucks not being able to use mine or deal with it leaching for 6 months. I filled my tank about 35gal with salt and its currently mixing right now, had an awesome 12 hour long line going from under the sink to the tank to fill it. Waiting for it to mix all the way before i add sand and check the salinity. So far we're loving the PNW! ITs very different from florida but I've always been a fan of cold grey rainy days so its fitting. I also plan on posting in the classifieds for used LR to try and get it cheaper or one piece of LR then just getting base rock for it to spread to. Ill be starting a new thread to track how things are going and post pics as it comes along! Thanks for any advice and help with LFS and when i ask about my parameters. This will be the 3rd tank im setting up 2nd 40gal (after relocating) Also im just doing a HOB filter to go as filterless as possible. Ill post soon!
  16. Hello all, my name is Nic and my wife and i moved here from Tampa Florida to start school here and just change the venue a little bit. I own a 40gal breeder and am just now starting to get it set up. Im setting up my RODI unit today and going to start filling up the tank. I dried out all my live rock that i had but didn't realize that to cure it would take so long with the phosphates slowly leaking over time. Ive gone to a few stores including World of Wet Pets, their "LR" was just covered in brown algae and selection was little to none. Then we went over to Cuttle Fish and Coral which was awesome but they had LR for 9$lb which i thought was ridiculous. So my question is does anyone have some LR they're willing to sell? Or have any ideas of what to do for my LR to cure it fast without having leaching problems? Any suggestions would be nice! Hope to meet some of y'all and looking forward to starting up my tank again! Thanks, Nic
  17. Hello all, My name is Nic and my wife and i will be moving to the beaverton area mid May, i wanted to get a head start on gathering info on local fish stores and the local selection so i can get an idea on starting my tank. Ive been reefing for about 6 years and currently have a 40gal breeder with a mixed LED DIY lighting. I plan on starting from scratch so any advice on local places or if i can get live rock from locals cheeper than a LFS that would be great! Looking forward to the move and getting my tank up and running again,
