  1. Didn't this club do very well when it was on Reef2Reef( I think that was where it was) instead of having the overhead and maintenance of its own board.  Maybe we should go back to that so we could concentrate on membership instead of tech problems?

  2. What is your recent fascination with paid membership? A paid membership is not required to post and use the forum. What's it to you anyway?

    I have two reasons:

    1. The dramatic reduction in paid membership illustrates the poor organizational skill of the current Leadership.  When I joined in 2013 I asked what the membership perks were?

I was told that there was not really any, but why be a cheap sob? If you can't afford $24 a year you should not be in this hobby.

    2.  I have always felt this is wrong.  I get to pay $24 to listen to somebody who doesn't care enough to help out.  This membership issue is really about money.  Advertisers and Sponsors don't want their message held to only the 25 members who have paid.  So its given away. Why should anybody pay dues?

  3. Are all of the members who have paid for membership showing banners?  I see a lot of posters who have not paid and even some board members.  With only 25 paid members this year, I am interested in who is and isn't a paying member.

  4. No, I said your statement was ignorant. I would think at 68 you'd be a little wiser than you act.

Not once have a told you that I was going to beat you up, or even made the insinuation... I would say the exact same things I've posted here to your face, I highly doubt you'd do the same.

Again, keep trying to make this personal you're only making yourself look more foolish.

    I don't mind.

  5. No threats so far but if you'd like to keep trying to make this personal I'd love to continue the discussion face to face, I have a feeling you'd probably change your angle. If you'd like me to continue to educate you on the subject feel free to PM me.

Doug, sorry for the hijack... SWF.com is pretty good about standing behind their orders, a lot of shipping companies are having trouble with the crazy weather on the eastern part of the country.

You are the one who made it personal. Ignorant is a very friendly word.  Do you really believe at 35 years of age you could beat up a 68 year old man with heart trouble.  You must be a hell of a tough person.

  6. Doug I'd say more likely than not the fish are gonners...

No, 20 years of this hobby will teach you a thing or two and breeding a few different types of fish over the years gives me a little first hand knowledge of the subject.

So let's start with your extremely flawed logic... Your wonderful skills of copy and paste are halfway correct, yes all of those things are in fact true but you forget one major factor. All of the above statements are true within your sterile little closed environment. Now sell all of those wonderful captive raised never exposed to disease fish and watch them get dumped into tanks full of wild caught fish. Guess what, a portion of those fish get sick and die.

The fact that collection and shipping is extremely stressful and adds to the mortality rate is a no brainer, all fish ship like crap get sick stressed and a portion of them die. So yes removing the shipping and collection factor does help, but none of that applies unless you are keeping them in their sterile environments, once removed and introduced to their wild counterparts they're now exposed to a gumbo pot of different diseases and parasites that they have no immunity to what so ever unlike in the wild where they get sick and either fish off infections and diseases or die.

You can jerk off on the MBI board all you want and pat yourself on the back but be careful how you throw rocks...

Are you threatening me?  If I come to the next meeting are you going to beat me up?  It would be nice if you paid dues if you have so much to say.

    Parasites and disease

Parasites can greatly increase the stress and decrease the survivability of all fish. Parasites and bacterial infections can be a major concern in clownfish. Tank raised clownfish are well managed to prevent parasites and generally do not suffer from internal parasites like some wild harvested fish do.

    2. http://www.madhattersreef.com/5-reasons-to-buy-tank-rasied-fish/

Tank raised fish are healthier.  Wild caught fish have a higher risk of being infected with parasites and other diseases more so than captive bred fish. This is due to the fact that most breeders will take the necessary steps to prevent disease and treat parasites. Another great fact about tank raised fish is they come from a control environment and are more adapted to aquarium life. This makes them less fearful and more friendly to other tank mates, then their wild caught counterparts.

    3. https://www.coralreeffarm.com/aquacultured-live-rock-corals.php

Every time you take a fish out of the ocean, you are disturbing an ecosystem.  In addition, if you catch a fish directly from the ocean, there is no telling what sort of bacteria or diseases the fish might be carrying.  Tank raised fish were bred for one reason—to be part of saltwater fish tanks.  In some sense, you can think of tank-raised fish as “cured” fish.  As such, aquarium hobbyists seek out tank raised fish rather than fish that come directly from the ocean.

    Superior hardiness

Wild-collected fish endure quite an ordeal in the chain of custody from the time they’re captured on some far-away reef until they reach your local fish store. Many specimens succumb to the cumulative stress at some point along the way or at their final destination in the hobbyist’s tank. Captive-bred specimens don’t experience these rigors and, therefore, have a much better rate of survival.

    More likely disease-free

Specimens bred in captivity are less likely to be exposed to the various pathogens and parasites that plague wild specimens, so there’s a greater chance they’ll arrive in your aquarium in a healthy, disease-free state. However, that doesn’t mean they’re bulletproof! They’ll still get sick if they’re ever placed in a tank that contains (or contained) infected wild specimens.

So you like having the option of roughly 4 different kinds of fish in your tank? Because that's about all you have for choices if you're keeping tank raised fish.

Sorry but that's one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen, just because a fish is tank raised has little to do with diseases. In fact it's commonly believed that tank raised fish can be more susceptible to disease because of coming from such sterile environments.

Similar to humans never being exposed to the common cold, the flu etc... The more were exposed to different strains we become more resistant.

You are one smooth talking devil.  And very ignorant!  First I am setting up a breeding facility and tank raised fish are easier to deal with.  As to their health, I have listed four articles that will explain the reduced exposure to disease and parasites.  If this doesn't cure the ignorance, let me know and I will post another 10 or 20 articles to help finish your education.

  8. I want a controller and a auto top off what do u guys recommend for cheep?!

If your tank is a display tank in your front room, then you may want an electrical ATO.  I have a fishroom and use float valves and have not had a problem in 20 years.  Don't use a float valve and try to add anything with the water or it may leak.

As for a controller, it depends on what you want.  I have some small temperature controllers for a single tank that cost about $100.  I also have an APEX system that controls my brood stock system with two 300 watt heaters in the sump.

  9. Gas up the truck and head into portland for your fish needs! Cheaper than overnight shipping...and you can hand pick your pre-quarantined, pre-fed fish! Most LFS in the area are good about doing that...most.

I will buy only tank raised fish to avoid disease and parasites.  Also it is 86 miles one-way to the nearest fish store, and online is cheaper?

  10. Maybe they can refund you the money so we don't have to listen to you anymore......

You've been a troll for over a year on this site.  Sure I've been negative too but can be positive at times as well.  You on the other hand have been grumpy the entire time you've been here.  Cheer up once in awhile.  It's amazing what it does in the community.  People might even start to like you...

I'll take the refund.  I would hate to make others think about something new.  How many paying customers are left 10-15?

  11. Necessary post?

You don't have to do anything. Most of your fellow fish raising and frag swapping hobbyists like to give to the community. My apologies if this doesn't work for you.

You are really attuned to others opinions aren't you.  For my $24 you will get my opinions whether you like them or not.  Is this a necessary post?  I didn't know they had to be "necessary".  Please define a necessary post for me.

  12. I have raised one clutch of clowns back in 1998.  Not too much has changed, but the real advances have come in raising pelagic fish like angels.

  13. I have 4 breeder tanks one of which is empty.  I have the Neon Goby pair, a pair of saddlebacks and a pair of black ocellaris.  I have yet to decide what I am going to try in the fourth tank but believe I will try mandarins.  I also have a pair of Yellow Neon Gobies in a 135.

I am still waiting for the clowns to lay eggs, but the saddlebacks are very close and have turned very dark.  The female is huge at about 3.5 inches.

So in the meantime, I need to get the rots going, my BRT hooked to a 55 for a sump with a separate heater and skimmer.  I designed the BRT based on a research paper I bought.  I hope it works as well as the snagger.

  14. Sometimes a plan works out.  I have a pair of Neon Gobies and I wanted to raise the fry.  They were nested in a piece of live rock and I could never get them both out at once. So I put the rock and both fish in a 20 gal high and began to look for a way to catch the fry if I could not get the eggs.  I came across the design you see above.  I have installed it on the goby tank with a DIY LED lure that is taped to the front of the tank.  The air runs continuously but the lure comes on 30 minutes after dark and stays on for 3 hours.  I cleaned and installed the catcher every day for the last two weeks, trying to see when the larva would hatch.  This morning I had about 20 larva in the snagger.  I will leave it there tonight in case of any late arrivals.  But what I know now is the egg cycle.  I will do this again the next time they show breeding behavior and I will be able to forecast the larva hatch.  I am still in preparation with my food system and I have yet to start the rotifers, but now I can plan a date to try raising the larva.

  15. I made a suggestion for a frag swap before the last PNWMAS officer change.  I never heard back.  I live in The Dalles and often take visitors to the Bonneville Dam visitor center.  They have a large outside picnic area with a lot of grass and covered areas.  In addition they have the sturgeon center, the fish hatchery, the fish ladders and dam viewing area and a really nice flower garden to tour.  It seems ideal for a family summer afternoon with a variety of activities for the family and kids while we eat and swap frags.  We could call it Dam Frags or some such nonsense.

  16. I believe Fusion will work fine with a wireless hook up.  It is faster with a cable connection and I am in the basement and would need a signal booster.  Its not an issue that would be hard to change later if you want.
