  1. Did you try plugging it into a different outlet? 2 pumps can't be broken. Pull them apart and put them back together again.

How about making sure the venturi is in the proper place? I don't think you are stupid, it is just easy to overlook - and I am squinting from like 1500 miles away...

Be prepared to change 10% water everyday until it is fixed.

  2. Pump is dead? You just cleaned it out or something?

Do you have a multimeter to see if there is any resistance.

Don't chuck it! I will be home Saturday if that is too long I can get my girlfriend to stick a pump out on the front porch.

  3. I have a diy skimmer - needs a pump. Worked really well for my old 120g. I can throw in a mag 5. I don't have a venturi for it though. You can have it for a future frag trade but I can't get it to you right now. I'm in Montana for at least another day or so. If you just need a pump the mag 5 is on the table.

  4. I guess I should clarify - the opening at the top end of the return should not be submerged. If the opening is currently submerged, you will see a difference in performance if you raise it above the water surface in the new sump. Dial in your skimmer to where you think it is performing the best, measure, and there you have your optimal depth for the skimmer chamber in your sump!

  5. Since it has a vertical return pipe, I would figure that you shouldn't have the water level above that, otherwise it would cause back pressure into the skimmer body, forcing more water up toward the cup. It can be submerged, but you will have a wetter skimmate, with a ratio directly related to the depth below the water surface. Hope this helps.

  6. I cooled my halides with 3 120mm computer case fans - with a 12v power supply run to a fan controller. I had the fans lying around, bought a $2 12v charger from goodwill, added a Molex conector that I clipped off something else and bought the fan controller off newegg for $10 on sale. The controller had 6 dials, so I vented my under-tank cabinet with 2 more fans and mounted the controller in the canopy - looked sweets and had the fans dialed to whatever speed I wanted for $15...

Awesome, easy, diy mod. Wish I had taken pictures.

  7. Becketts work great, unless you do not have a pump that will push enough pressure to it. A cheap venturi valve is available - here is one:

And you can build the rest out of abs or pvc length and fittings - you won't be able to see the bubbles until they reach the top of the neck and adjust from there - I had a 75 gallon reef that I made a skimmer for in this same way in the late 90's

worked great - and for the most part the whole top end can be slip - fitted and remain water tight.

About $35-45 in parts total, I imagine, without a pump.

Though I do believe you are better off convincing someone to sell you a small skimmer for the same amount and maybe modifying it.

DIY is very gratifying when it works out, but a failure just feels like a waste of time and money - and you are right back where you started.

  8. The base of that bubble looks big enough to epoxy a frag plug or 2 to it - line them up to existing holes in your rockwork that way you can remove it easier if you intend to frag.

Or epoxy to a small rubble chunk you can wedge in somewhere.
