  1. Thanks everyone. im super excited. cant wait to see everything take off. Its definitely easier to see everything and the colors on some of the corals looks awesome.

The big fish is a Colombian shark. its a brackish water catfish. hell get bigger, to about a foot long. but hes a bottom feeder and leaves everything alone. although he has a taste for engineer goby. we put a couple small ones in the tank and, he ate them. :( it was a sad and horrible lesson. hes the closest thing to a real shark i think you can get without the shark issues. fun fish had him since he was like 3inches.

  2. So i placed a two liter bottle of already started culture of phytoplankton in this little tank on mon the 5th. its been three days and i believe its ready to harvest. its much darker now. below is a pic of it today the 8th.

I'm gonna split it tomorrow and start a new culture. excited as that one will be a 100 percent done by me. hope all goes well.

  3. did they look like pretty nice ones. I really want one with noticeable spots and stripes.

i fell in love with them at TPA, they had one that would follow me around and i could practically pet him. seems like a very cool fish. thanks ill have to look while im up there this weekend.

  4. So i got a 2 litter of phytoplankton from Kimberlee.

i thought it would be ready to use, but little did i know, i would be getting my feet wet the first night.

    Thanks kim. ;)

im excited about trying to do this. so here goes my first attempt.

I have the phyto in a tank with lights on a timer, and hooked a air line. now im waiting, and waiting and waiting.

i have to wait a couple more days.

Im hoping it works, but even if it doesn't, im gonna try again.

for if i can master this, then i can grow pods. i can grow my own live food sources. that's exciting(clap)

so heres a pic of my setup, nothing fancy but we will see if it works.

will let you know how things go

  5. hello fellow reefers. (clap)

im sure there are a bunch of you out there, that would love to help a newbie out...

Im just that newbie. :D i started my tank 4 months ago, and im still trying to fill in all the gaps, and make my tank look amazing. Not to mention gain as much knowledge in this hobby as possible.

If any of you out there ,have any corals to get rid of, weather its a pest, an extra, a frag, its out grown your tank, a newbie gift, or a piece you thought you would love and just changed your mind. then i would love to give that coral, a new home, in my 100 gal. I've enjoyed learning how to tend to different corals and my hope is to grown some big corals, so ill be able to return the favor to fellow refers in the future. I currently only have compacts on my tank. fyi. I really dont want to get corals, just to kill them.(sad)

ill be heading down to Eugene tomorrow, and will be heading back to Salem sat morning or early afternoon. I will be available to pick stuff up along the way back up. If you have anything to offer please PM me OR text my cell 5038816014, my name is joany. Thank you, and keep the heart of the reef alive.(rock2)

  6. My husband was in it for years, down in Eugene with some buddies of his, that worked at liquid sunshine. once we got together, 4 years ago, he got a 29 gal and started getting me into it. i have been hooked since. he always wanted a large tank though, so 5 months ago i pooled a bunch of cash together and got him a 100gal, and a 135 gal tank. we have had the 100gal up for 4 months now, so our feet are wet. but we have been dieing to get the big tank up. excited to expand and explore more in this hobby.:)

  7. burningbaal has it right. came from a tank that wasn't being taken care of/ he was breaking down.

Gill i totally understand and agree with you on prevention. unfortunately im lacking a full clean up crew. I had shrimp, crabs snails and cucumbers. BUt my wrasse ate the srimp and some crabs, so im stuck with mostly snails and cucumbers (and the few crabs that made it through) at this point. I have always maintained a healthy clean tank. I haven't had any issues. just this one piece of coral that came with algae already living on it..

    here my parameters:

    Ph 8.1

    Phos 0-0.25

    Nitrate 0

    nitrite 0

    free iron 0

    calcium 580

    KH 110

    Magnesium 1250

my photo cycle is 10hrs on 14 hrs off

    Temp is 78.6

I do regular water changes(10-15%) and sand bed cleaning.

  8. Arminius ill try your dip idea, sounds the most promising..

    thanks for all the help.

Yes i do regular water changes with ro/di water and test regularly too.. my tank parameters have always been very good. the algae is localized to the duncans head, it was on the it when we got it, from another individual. I dont have a algae problem any were else in my tank. its just on this piece and its consuming it.
