The reason I ended up getting out of the hobby was I took a job for a marketing company and was away from home somtimes 3 weeks at a time so it was to hard to keep the tank up. I have had a 75 planted tank up and running now for a year and a half and just started a 29 bow nano reef. The hobby has changed tremendously. Back in the day we had no foods to go buy for our corals so we made our own skimmers were huge no additives to speak of and the salt was hit and miss but once you got dialed in and kept up with water changes things were OK. There are so many skimmer, pump, lighting, food, additives and whatever else out ther now it is alot easier to setup a reef and keep it going. Back in those days I was importing live rock from Hawaii and would bring in sometime up to 30 boxes at a time. All of the members would order what they wanted and the cost was the same for all of us. Now I guess the Hawaii rock is no longer available. That is too bad it was really nice stuff. I had a friend that owned a shop in the U district called Fin and Feather and he always got me stuff at his cost so that helped a bit.
